Makeup Airbrush Recommendations?

I'm looking into getting an airbrush for my high orc makeup. Any recommendations? How hard is it to self-apply? I know nothing about airbrushing, and seek to learn...

I've done airbrush artwork (and a little bit of temp-tattooing) and found it to be really easy. I use a double action bottom feed, siphon feed airbrush and canned air system... nice and cheap, easy to clean too.

Clean it immediately after you use it, every time.
You'll probably want to dilute the makeup with something, but I'll let someone else chime in on that one, I haven't successfully found the mix.

Any recommendations on where to get said makeup, or said airbrush? I know I'm looking for a faster way to get my makeup on for my high orc, and have it last longer, as currently, I have to put makeup on three or four times an event because of sweat.

Barrier spray for the win.

I used it all last season, and it helps... but not enough.

Badger is another good name brand for airbrush products. I use airbrush often as my sarr for touching up corners, and admittedly painting my arms in the summer.

My badger airbrush takes Mehron's liquid makeup -very- well. Just make sure you clean it after you're finished, and you're good to go.

How much should I expect to spend on an airbrush and makeup?

That depends on your budget really.

We have put a few hundred dollars into our air brush stuff. But then I use it in NPC camp.

For one color make-up (Ogre, Orc, Stone/Dark Elf) a cheap airbrush is all that's needed. When Walmart still sold modelling supplies you could get a cheapo Testors brand airbrush for around $20.

I think the badger kit was around $40. I don't remember whether or not it came with propellant. Additional cans aren't terribly pricey, and if you're just doing your own makeup one can is all you'll need for a few events. As Ali mentioned, the liquid mehron doesn't need any dilution to be used in the airbrush. I don't know about other brands. With ANY makeup however, clean it as soon as you're done. You'll be sorry if you don't.

Liquid Mehron works good. Only occasionally have i put a little bit of water to dilute it if it seems particularly thick.

Always run water through it till it runs clear when you are going to let it sit.

If you plan on doing metallic, with the mix in powder, that is a whole different ball game. I basically ruined one of my brushes with that, and had to tear it down, replace a few parts, etc. So stay away from that at first till you are comfortable with it.

One of my brushes does it great, now, I forget what the difference was between the two, but if you want to start doing metallic, and want to try and avoid my initial mistakes we can talk in PM's.

I got a professional airbrush for around $100 as I use it in art work as well as applying makeup. The compressor was another 100 - I don't use the 'canned air' because there's more than air in those things. I get all of my airbrush makeup at Kyrolan with their aqua-colors. Although water based, I've never had an issue with running other than in the rain. And it flows nicely through the airgun without any need for watering down. I believe it's around $10 for an ouncee - but with an air brush, that stuff goes a long way.

I use a badger air brush just fine with the Mehron liquid makeup. usually don't have to dilute it.

I got my airbrush for $60 after a 50% off coupon at michael's. You can get a cheap compressor that way too. Also check ebay for that stuff.

Keep it clean and it should work out just fine. Though if you sweat a lot you may still need to touch it up a bit throughout the day. Usually I don't have any issues though.

I have to say, the idea does make a make up character seem more appealing. Hmm. Cost, though.

Make up races arn't that bad, I play a fairly heavy make up toon (my turtle) and Its maybe $20 total a year (6 per make up cake, 3 colors, couple of sponges) Course I'm no airbrusher, I prefer the manual style ^.^ (Okay roping other people into helping with the manual style...)

I actually have to agree that I use the manual style and it works pretty well for me too. I've had airbrush done for me and seen it work beautifully. But the things to do it with are just a little bit more work to obtain and use than a simple cake and sponge like DaveG said. :)

some kinds of makeup look better airbrushed, though, like the silver for golems. it goes on smoother and more evenly, if applied correctly.

airbrushes are key when doing large areas (like bare arms or torsos) because it speeds things up.

She does speak truth. Although Darker makeup you can usually get away with simple cake if your careful and apply it thickly. ;)
