[.11] Formal Magic Pre-req Inquiry

I assume that Formal Magic is still only accessible via a 9th spell slot; I'm curious as to whether or not it's been discussed as to making the pre-req a Scholar XP pre-req (unless that's already the case and I missed it in the packet somewhere).

I'd love for Potion/Scrollmakers/Channel Specialists to have access to Formal Magic, is what I'm saying, without having to be forced into buying spell slots, which basically isn't their thing. Formal Magic is definitely the End Game for scholars; it makes sense that since there's multiple paths for scholars, all should lead to Rome, yeah?

More people with access to the best thing in the game (high magic)? That's crazy ;)

You’ve expressed your opinion on High Magic on nearly every thread involving the subject. We get it. You don’t like it.

I would, howeve, ask that you make your commentary constructive and respectful. Your tone isn’t helpful and discourages participation. I dislike being baited, so I would ask you to stop.
 
It's something I suggested in the crafting discussion so as to open up formal casting to Artisans... From what I understand, the response was a big fat "NOPE." Which is to say that they want to keep it a capstone ability.

I personally think Artisans should be able to do Formal Magic, if only because I've spent an hour+ RPing or marshalling someone else RPing multiple rituals, and, really, that's pretty much the exact kind of thing Artisans are really designed to be doing.

Which strikes me as inconsistent, as Artisans would have access to the capstone Fighter and Rogue abilities by purchasing Blacksmithing, Alchemy, and Traps.

However, as Artisans tend to be non/low combat, it would seem that Formal Magic would tend to be a better fit for them. Battlemagic is designed for combat (though it has useful out-of-combat options, such as healing and protectives). But FM, less so (even if High Magic is very combat focused).

Indeed. And you could easily gate the non-item creation high magic behind 9th level spells. I feel like that would be fair, myself, and would address any power issues about it that may be causing trepidation.

Of course, we're just musing at this point. :cool:
 
I don’t know if Item creation needs to be gated. Considering that Rebirth is already gated behind a 9th, and that Magic Augmentation, Storm augmentation, and Elemental Augmentation are all impacted by available spells, I’d say Item Creation would be the primary driver for FM for crafters, personally.

As an artisan, this is a big thing for me. I went full scroll crafter in hopes of a caveat eventually coming up just like this one haha. I think giving Artisans access to Formal Magics, even limited to item creation and no high magic or something like that would be worth it in my eyes. I realize without high magic, formals are much less useful (I think, as an artisan I dont have a FULL understanding of it), but just being able to cast rituals would be worth the build for the added role play stuff.

There's no reason to keep any of the formal manipulations from someone who's just making items.

I'll say this; the proposal I put together had the pool requirements to be able to access formal magic at the same build expenditures that they are now. So nothing would actually change about accessing formal magic except that you could do so without a 9th level spell. Restricting high magic purchases to only formal related HM unless you have a 9th would still see scholars buying their formals for all the goodies they get access to.

yeah, I dont know about all the high magic stuff. Most of what I know is tied directly to healing pools and rebirth and such.
 
The section on high magic begins on page 134 of the current rule book. Page 135 has a very handy chart.

Foresight, Formal Link, and Ritual Manipulation I would leave accessible to anyone with formals. Everything else I would restrict to having a 9th level spell purchased.
 
The way I see it, you don’t need any backstabs to get the high level rouge abilities. You don’t need any critical attacks to get high level fighter abilities, so why should you need a 9th level spell to gain access to the high level scholar abilities? Esspecially with the new scholar channeling skills giving more options to scholars.
 
(Also, if someone really wants to do FM but not so much combat, I wanna point out that this would get rid of some KOs...)

You mean put it behind a gold cost... Trap globes and alchemy are still a thing. :P

Yes...but neither are scholar skills, Norman....

You know...what we're talking about...counting towards Formal Magic...

You know what you -coulda- said was, "Put it behind a gold cost because scrolls are still a thing."

Gosh, marshal, get in the game.
 
Scrolls and potions are one option, but this also keeps formal magics open to scholars who want to do primarily channeling.
