Denver Level Cap/Registrar Story into 2017?

I am a strong advocate of NEVER dropping Denver's level cap. I enjoy a level cap that is based on the highest level a character could achieve attending only Acarthia events, and with locally-earned Goblin Stamps blankets, etc. -- In other words, I approve of our current system.

I was among those really nervous about the plan quoted below in Jesse's words would work out for Halloween.

I thought it worked out great! I super enjoyed hosting all our many visiting players from beyond the mists! They were polite players, concerned appropriately for respecting the level of our local game, stayed in-character, their costumes are terrific! I thought their presence added a lot that was positive. I would eagerly welcome them back to Denver again.

Therefore, I advocate for a permanent state of what was tested at the Halloween 2016 event. Let's keep rolling with this Registrar storyline described below which meters behavior, not just OOG rules that control character cards only.

Thanks,
Trace

LEVEL CAP - Temporarily suspended for October only- We will be having roughly 15-20 out of chapter players with levels higher than ours... here is our way around that without violating the bylaws....

The Spinners don't recognize any of them in our story and are very confused as to what they're doing here. Their very existence here could do irreparable damage to our timeline if they stay.....

The Registrar also sees that the dead recognize these travelers as outlanders and possible invaders to our land and fears that with their power and magic items, greater beings will also be summoned to them and our area...

Together, they agree that these outlanders need to try to "blend in" or there could be severe consequences on a large scale.... (OOG- Travelers above our cap will be told to contact plot if they do something that could be deemed "not blending in" power wise....

Magic item transfer will be Restricted items only. NO LCOs will be accepted. In addition, players may only bring 5.

Agreed! The newcomers did a great job at respecting the Spinner's wishes and contained themselves even when taken off guard. They were wonderful to have around and interact with and I hope to see them all again in the future. The Registrar story line was a great way of maintaining the level cap while also getting to meet characters from beyond the mists and I hope we can continue to see travelers.

I so strongly agree with this! From not only a combat perspective, but also a roleplay perspective! There were so many stories and friendships made! It would be disappointing to have those be limited to one event locally a year.

I even heard people being reprimanded throughout the event by other visitors if they were being too powerful. So if there any chance at having the cap lifted and a system like what we had in place this event, I would strongly support that.

GROW THE POPULATION!!!

I also support this, it was a good way to allow travelers while still leaving in place a faux level cap.

But possibly we should also think about how this would affect formalists in town, and if that should be changed. Possibly doing a lot of formals isn't blending in :)

I'll be completely honest, I'm with Trace. I support NEVER dropping our cap. I thought that dropping the cap, even for an event was going to wreck the economy along with marginalize local players. I'm happy to say that it didn't happen with this bunch, and I thank you for that. I've had some abysmal experiences with out of towers in the past and this group was great in handling themselves and working with everyone.

That said, I think the opening mod had a big impact on this, and if we were to continue this story, we are essentially committing to a mod at the beginning for every traveler who may not fit under the normal level cap. This may be an issue where many things need to happen in an event or where schedules conflict. I support the continuation of the storyline, and I like it, but I think the IG justification is a huge factor in making this work, so it will take a lot of extra work to keep going. I fully support it for October events as an annual thing though, I just don't want to place an extra burden on our already loaded for bear plot team.

Great point, Taylor; thank you for bringing that up. At the time of my initial post up top in this thread, I was not aware that the "don't attract undue attention" rule (IG) did not apply to use of formals.

I think it would be nice if that blanket extended over formals use, too -- Yes, it's nice to have that extra bonus. Local PCs work so hard for their levels, and I don't wish to see them upstaged or deprived of either fees of IG money, or just the opportunity to do cool stuff and look cool while doing it.

Extending the blanket of the Registrar's gaze over formals use, too (and use of everything, in case I'm missing something here) seems like an easy win overall.

Fade/Mike: Thanks for voicing a (somewhat) dissenting opinion, which I think is really important here. You make an excellent point about the importance of the opening mod. What do you think about a compromise that specific traveling characters who've already been through that don't need the repeat? If we get new travelers every event, that doesn't lessen the burden much -- but, hey, if we're getting first-time travelers every event, that's a really great thing worth supporting, right?

An easy way to deal with newcomers might simply be a standardized template email that is sent to any character who registers from out of chapter, or a hard copy placed in their logistics packet. This quick write up could describe the encounter that all newcomers have on their way in to Acarthia, and would not require any staff resources.

Personally as a PC, I would 100% always volunteer to help with the visitor intro mod, it was a lot of fun. I feel a little sorry for Tevas being on my flank and soaking all my death double taps. And hey he survived and wasn't my undead minion all game long, or was he?
