A Seat at the Table: The Outlanders’ Call to Arms

Greetings, People of Fortannis,

My name is Dain Halloway, and I reach out to you now not just with words, but with a call—a call for help, for hope, and for the future of my people.

Let me tell you a story.

I was born in the land of Typhut, a quiet woodland realm nestled deep within a hidden pocket of the Mists of Fortannis. It was a place untouched by conquest, unscarred by war. We lived simply, peacefully. But peace, as it turns out, doesn’t make you invincible.

Fifteen years ago, the earth rose against us. Quakes shattered our homeland. Thousands were lost, and the land itself was broken beyond healing. With heavy hearts and empty hands, we fled into the Mists—our only compass a desperate hope for survival.

When we stepped out of the fog, we found ourselves on Olarith: a vast island continent of smoldering mountains, verdant forests, and creatures unlike any I had ever seen. Not humans. Not elves. Not dwarves. No High Races at all—just beings most of Fortannis would call "monsters." But here, they are something else: the citizens of a unique alliance known as the Concordant Pact—seventeen factions bound together in fragile balance by law, magic, and purpose.

But we, the refugees, were not part of that Pact.

To them, we were just "Outlanders"—strangers, interlopers, vermin. We were met with suspicion, rejection, even violence. We were weak, yes—but not broken. We had survived the fall of Typhut. We would survive this too.

Ten years ago, my mentor and dear friend, Endrik Ashhand, stood before the Concordant factions at their decennial summit, The Reverie, and begged for our inclusion. He was turned away. We were seen as disorganized, rootless, and useless.

But we are not useless. And we are not rootless. We are Outlanders, yes—but we are also craftsmen, healers, warriors, scholars, adventurers, and survivors. Over the past decade, we have fought to unite, to contribute, and to prove ourselves—not with pretty words, but with honest work and stubborn hearts.

And now, at long last, the chance has come again. The next Reverie approaches, and with the help of the wise Lamias of the Speakers of the Cunoasteri, we’ve earned a place on the docket once more. The leaders of the seventeen factions will gather, and if we can earn twelve of their votes, we will finally claim our rightful place as the eighteenth faction of the Concordant Pact.

But I cannot do this alone.

That’s why I call upon you, people of Fortannis. Outlanders, adventurers, heroes—I ask you to stand with us at the Castle of the Reverie. Every faction values something different—wisdom, strength, honor, innovation, spirit—and I know among you are those who embody these values in spades.

Your presence, your deeds, your voices—they could be the difference between exile and acceptance.

We don’t come asking for pity. We’re not begging for handouts. What we seek is a chance—a chance to build, to contribute, to belong. To earn our place not just in Olarith, but in the future of Fortannis.

If you have questions, I’ll answer them. If you need guidance, I’ll give it. If you’re willing to fight for us—I’ll be at your side.

We’ve come this far. Help us go the rest of the way.

In fellowship and fire,
Dain Halloway, of the Outlanders

As the host of this year’s Reverie, I want to take the time to welcome you all. It will be exciting to see…those from outside Olarith and hear all about the great historical events and tales of Fortannis. I personally look forward to learning about your different cultures and the different viewpoints you’ll provide to this esteemed tradition.

Archon of the Speakers of the Cunoasteri

"Fair den unto you, Master Halloway."

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ "I am glad to hear that you have been able to find a new home and am most pleased to say that your call has been heard and answered as far afield as the Grimere Expanse. We Unbounded of the Expanse have begun to make ready and will lend sword and sorcery to you and yours in this Olarith at the appointed hour."
‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ "Are there any laws, mundane or magical, that we should know of before we set foot into Olarith? Proscriptions against certain conduct, venerated places that mustn't be disturbed, unmarked borders that should not be crossed? Etcetera."

‎"Fortuitous meeting, Archon.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ "From the sound of it, your acquaintance shall be of the first I shall try to make - to know a people well, inquire after their histories. This axiom, we both seem to hold, thus, it would be my honor to hear of your world, its people, and its truths. Till we meet in person."

Don't think I can't see what this is, Halloway! You're calling in reinforcements in some feeble attempt to sow discord and rattle the very foundations of the Pact and Olarith as we know it! You’re trying to strong-arm votes for your pitiful whelps, but if you think the Oni are going to be intimidated, you are sorely mistaken!

Bah! You Outlanders have been nothing but trouble for Olarith since you arrived! You may have won over the Wyrmlords with your sob story and plucky attitude, but the rest of the First Estate will never support this nonsense, mark my words!

I've warned you before, Halloway: stay where you belong, down in the dirt. You bring these new Outlanders here, and there will be consequences! Same goes for you, Mira: stay out of this, and don't encourage these interlopers.

And you, elf, there's only one natural law of Olarith that matters to you: you and your kind aren't in the Pact, and thus, you are nothing to all the factions that matter.

Now now Grandmaster, I for one welcome this new wave of Outlanders to Olarith. It sounds like they will bring a unique perspective about them not seen these last fifteen years.

You might not know this future arrivals, but we Amenoi Fae are greatly attuned to the four seasons, and I very much look forward to conversing with our Elven and Sylvanborn visitors whom I’ve found to be similarly attuned to nature. In fact, I acknowledge their magical aptitude and the value those Outlanders bring to Olarith each and every day here.

So welcome travelers!

Oof! Such aggression! But it's okay. I can understand why people from the outside can be scary. I am sure we can turn that frown upside down.

Ah! The fae! I am glad to see my ancestors have a place among the Pact, being Sylvanborn myself. I am more attuned to the Foundational elements but I am sure we can find common ground.

Oh, I should introduce myself. I am Elaine Galloway, Mist Traveling Hero Extraordinar! I hear "Help!" and I come running!

Can I ask why the Outlanders are so hated? Is it just because they are not from the Mistsphere? Have they done anything in particular that would make them hated so?

Now they are inviting yet more Outlanders, I see. It is nearly becoming an infestation. They reek of guilt, sowing chaos and disorder with no regard for our systems. They seek only to take and to destroy, and show nothing but contempt for Olarith and the Pact.

As for the laws, Outlander, laws and their attendant privileges are for citizens. You have no legal status here. You will obey the Archons without question and stay out of our way. If you give the First Estate no cause for anger, you may yet be lucky and remain beneath our notice.

Mark my words, these “visitors” will waste no time in further disrupting the order of Olarith, and I will be forced to… Take action.

Well, yes, that's technically true, the formal laws don't apply to those currently not part of the Pact, but as Host of the Reverie, I'm instituting a few house rules as it were: don't murder each other, don't steal stuff, don't cast necromancy, etc. .......or I'll unfortunately have to inform The Venatrix.

...You Outlanders have ambition, potential, self-worth, guts, and magic items that the Oni don't own... and they don't like any of these in newcomers...

...But you could be exactly what I've been looking for...

Heh heh heh heh...
