Adventurers Help Triad Thwart Their Enemy
On the eve of the Duke’s
annual tournament, strange rifts brought in visitors from another plane. They
called themselves the Triad, and they communicated via telepathic means to any
who witnessed them. They pleaded for help from the adventurers to stop a being
named Imix, an alleged fugitive from the Planar Federation.
They told those who agreed to
help that Imix was here, in Tar’Navarria, looking for something called “the
key.” This item would allow Imix
to utilize the full power of the planar stones that he had reportedly stolen
from the Triad during his escape. The key could not be described; as it adapts
its appearance on every plane it visits.
The adventurers would just have to find it for themselves.
Not long after the Triad
departed, Imix made his first appearance in Ashbury. The self-proclaimed Prince of the Elemental Plane of Fire,
Imix peacefully strolled into town and inquired about the key. He even offered
a reward for any information leading to it. However, not having any knowledge
of the key’s whereabouts or its appearance, the Ashbans could not accommodate
Imix.
A tense negotiation was
initiated between Imix and the entire adventuring community. Imix’ army of fire elementals were on
hand to deter hostilities. In attendance were all of the Ashban nobles and
sages whom Imix took great interest in. A cooperative agreement could not be
reached between the two sides, and Imix withdrew without conflict, stating that
he only wished to recover the key so that he could wage war against the
Elemental Plane of Chaos.
The nobles of the Ash Forest
gave orders to the sages present not to disclose the specifics of Imix’s
reward. This caused some consternation among many adventurers. The Ashbans
appeared confused about whether to help the Triad or to help Imix.
Imix and his top lieutenants
made many appearances in Ashbury over the next couple of days. They appeared to
have the ability to sense when the adventurers were withholding information
about the key. It didn’t take long before Imix lost patience and kidnapped
Lauroc DerWyrve, a sage who apparently had some knowledge of the key’s
whereabouts. After Lauroc was interrogated and released, Imix once again
pleaded with the Ashbans to cooperate, so that he and his army could depart our
plane peacefully. Once again, the Ashbans refused.
There were signs that
frustration and dissention began to set in among Imix’ troops. A renegade
lieutenant even went so far as to kidnap and torture Sir Indorian in an attempt
to force the hand of the Ashbury nobles. The gamble did not pay off, as a large
force of adventurers came to Sir Indorian’s rescue, and dispatched the
lieutenant and his faction of followers.
Hearing of this, Imix knew he
had to take action or risk losing his entire army. He issued an ultimatum to
the recently coroneted Baron Rorii. He demanded that the key be yielded to him
and threatened war if he was not appeased.
The Triad reappeared to
inform the adventurers that Imix was constructing a dominion of flame within
our plane, so that he might grow his army and stay here indefinitely. This would mean a constant war against
Ashbury until the key was found, or Imix was banished. The Triad gave the adventurers
instructions on how to find Imix’ stronghold, and departed once again.
The adventurers found the
cave of Imix just outside the city. The smoke and flames disoriented them, and
divided them down separate corridors. Wave after wave of flame soldiers
assaulted the Ashbans, but the soldiers could not stop the adventures from
ultimately confronting Imix and defeating him in combat.
Many of the planar stones
were recovered, and the key remained safely in the hands of the Ashbans. Although Imix was defeated, it is
unknown whether or not he will return. All that remains is for the Ashbans to
summon the Triad and return to them the key and planer stores.
Nobility Changes
Lord Du’Gaul Resigns
At the annual Ashbury
Tournament, Duke Frost announced the resignation of Du’Gaul Mornavor as regent
of Blythedale and knight of Ashbury. Lord Du’Gaul shall retain the honorary
title of Lord for his past deeds, service to Ashbury and Icenia and honorable
conduct. His Grace politely declined
to answer any further inquiries, saying only that we each must choose our own
path to follow.
Sir Rorii Named Baron of the Ash Forest
In a turn of events that took
many by surprise but also must have been well thought out by His Grace and Her
Excellency, Lady Glenduria Goodberry Manyave resigned from her post as Baroness
of the Ash Forest to resume a full time role on the Amani Council. She chose as her replacement her First
Knight, Sir Rorii.
After unofficially turning
the barony over to Sir Rorii, Duke Frost immediately made it official and
proclaimed Baron Rorii’s investiture as Baron of the Ash Forest. Grumblings
from certain factions in the Ash Forest about an Imladari elf becoming baron
have already been heard.
Sir Indorian Named Baron of Blythedale
The baronial coronet of
Blythedale has remained empty for quite some time, but soon after Lord
Du’Gaul’s resignation, Duke Frost named his ducal knight Sir Indorian
Silverleaf as the baron of Blythedale.
Baron Indorian takes with him his two squires, Squire Tellis Veladon, an
Amani elf, and the newly appointed Squire Jocelyn Fairfax, a human originally
from Falkirk.
Nordenn Wins
Tournament by Two Points
The Barony of Nordenn was
victorious in this year’s Annual Tournament, beating five other teams including
visitors from the Barony of Romwing. The winning team was led by Squire
Glorianna.
Duke Frost consulted with Sir
Eros and Lauroc to determine the winners in many competitions, and did not name
a Champion as his wife had done for years; he gave no comment as to why he
decided not to do so.
Colors was won again by the
Barony of the Ash Forest whose team read the Code of Chivalry off banners
attached to their bows. Despite Sir Rorii’s mangling of the final tenet, the
presentation was enough to gain them first place in this.
Combat was next, and the
group known as the Mistwalkers, which consisted mostly of members of Black
Forest, trounced their competition. In second place was the The Wings of
Polaris featuring Sparticous, winner of the Hero’s Competition for the last
three years.
The Spellcasters Battle was
won by the Mistwalkers again, putting them in first place. However, a poor
showing in Entertainment evened up the competition, as Nordenn’s hilarious skit
(which kept getting rewritten as it went along) easily took first.
Nordenn surprised itself by
winning Riddles, giving it 20 points to Ash Forest’s 17 and Mistwalker’s 15.
There were still enough events that either of the three could win.
Then No Code surprised
everyone by coming in second in Riddles, the Race, and Archery, but this was
not enough to make them a real challenger. By the end of the Archery
competition, Nordenn had 28, Mistwalkers 23, and the Ash Forest 21.
Archery was done indoors
because of incliment weather, and a few participants were heard to complain
that this changed their feel for it since they were used to shooting with a
wind. However, Sir Eros countered that by being indoors, everyone was on the
same “playing field” and no one could complain that the wind was against them
for their turn.
The Hero’s Battle was again
won by Sparticous, and the Mistwalkers surprised themselves as well as
observers by winning the Hunt (“for the first time ever!” beamed Gilwing).
However, when all was said
and done, Nordenn had managed to beat the competition. His Grace congratulated the winning
team and commented how happy he was that the competition was so honorably done
this year.
Sir Eros has announced that
next year’s competition will have some changes: “The battle competitions will
no longer be done with padded weapons, for one,” he said. “And Riddles may be
reorganized so that every groups tries for the answer at the same time.”
In the meantime, Squire
Glorianna has prepared an article advising those who might participate in the
future, and she should know, since her team won first place. Her comments
follow:
I write this in an effort to
encourage teams to participate in the Ashbury Tournament in 606. It was with
great pride and work and effort that Nordenn won this year’s Tournament. Here
are some tips to teams for next year.
Colors: Begin early.
Measure often. And remember its not only just about how you look but how you
present yourself. Clear voice, good speech (don’t read from papers, killed me
one year). Look like a formidable force. Use your entire entourage not just the
team members. Banners, flags, cloaks, capes, anything to bring presence to the
presentation. You wish to look like a military unit presenting themselves
before their liege.
Practice walking in
formation, and above all else ... don’t trip.
One day I will win Colors.
The above is my advice for all of you. Let my mistakes help you win.
The Hunt: The moment
you receive the sheet, begin cracking the cyphers and codes. Enlist the use of
your sages (I hired two last year) and assign team members not on the
tournament team itself to do nothing else but the Hunt.
Watch everything, because
anything could be a clue for the Hunt list.
Paranoia is good here; if it
looks suspicious its a potential hunt item.
Every other year is “most
commons,” so save your coppers and don’t do anything stupid which would make
you want to pay fines in coppers. You need them for the Hunt.
Superlatives: Look at your
judges and then write accordingly. You have his Grace and Sir Eros so heroic
and epic will work. However the crowd usually likes humor and his Grace has a
good sense of humor. Watch the other guest judge, as that is your deciding
voice. If they have a good sense of humor comedy is a good choice. Never
write anything so crass that you cannot present in front of nobility. You are
here to honor his grace not embarrass him.
The Race: Run as fast as you can. What else is
there to say? Ensure four people on your team can run, or at least three who
can run and one won’t lose too bad in one leg of the race.
Combat: Well, we never won
either the Hero’s Battle or the Team Battle. We’re a court of healers and
casters, a blacksmith and a Garuda. My recommendation: Use your special tactics
like disarm and parrys on teams in which it is a close call to beat. Don’t
waste them on the Sparticuses or Gilwings or Agnars of the world. Unless you are
one of them facing the other, then go for it. Save your special skills for the
combats in which it will help you win, not be a waste to use. While in my
opinion your hero should also be your champion, the individual which embodies
the courtly code of conduct and is chivalrous.... it tends to be your best
fighter. Fortunately Ash Forest has their Baron, which fulfills both roles!
Entertainment: Your goal is
to entertain the audience. Make them participate. Serious actually won for us
one year. But the general rule is if the audience participates, then it’s a
good bet you’ll place well.
Do not turn your back on the
audience. Speak up so the audience can hear you. Make eye contact, involve your
audience. Make sure your subject matter is something which is presentable to
your noble judges. And above all have fun! Entertainment should be about
everyone having some fun!
Casters Battle: Well...
it’s not the number of spells, but how fast you can dodge them or cast spell
shields on yourself. I’ve seen one competition where the Syrrandor team’s
caster won second and he had two spells in memory. Move a lot, dodge a lot, and
hit your target on the first try.
Now that you know some tips
and hints, why should we participate in the Tournament? It’s a chance for
pageantry, a chance to show your stuff to the duchy of Ashbury. It honors His
Grace and the Duchy of Ashbury when you participate. It gives the people
something positive to focus on in times where adversity and turmoil continue to
plague us externally. It’s a great bonding exercise for teams and it encourages
teams to work together.
And when done right can be a
lot of fun.
Good luck to all of you and I
look forward to seeing you in next year’s Tournament.
Squire Glorianna Wyndancer
Zatarina Norik
Named Healers Guildmistress
Dragon’s Flagon owner
Zatarina Norik has been named the new Ashbury city Healer’s Guildmistress,
which perhaps not coincidentally parallels the alternate future Ashbury
timeline in which Glantri gained control. Those adventurers who lived through
that time know that Zatarina died her permanent death for helping to fight
against that regime.
Guildmistress Zatarina has
written to the Ashbury Times concerning her goals for the Guild and we reprint
her comments here:
I suppose I should start with
an introduction. My name is Zatarina N. Norik and I am now Senior Head of the
Ashbury Healer’s Guild. Due to promises made that I will not break, I will
always follow the laws of Ashbury even if they may be contrary to my personal
feelings or the laws of the biata race.
I consider all races equal
unless they are thugs or twits. Don’t worry, it takes work to earn those
titles. Being a biata, gaining my complete trust is rare and not given freely.
Mouthing off, ordering assassinations, or slandering the nobles of Ashbury will
certainly place you on my bad side. It takes a long time for me to forgive
serious offenses, but those who know me are aware that when someone has won my
trust I will defend them to my last breath.
Now on to business:
The Healers’ Guild will have
a party every Friday night from 8pm to 11pm. The first party will be held on
the night of September 9th in the Dragon’s Flagon. Great food will be available
until we run out. Further parties will be in the Guild and will be by
invitation only. Invited guests will receive useful prizes.
Regular Guild hours will be
in the evenings (although of course the Guild will always be open for those
needing resurrection). For members, battle training will happen during the days
as well as training in political tactics.
The new structure for the
Guild consists of the following:
Shadows: Shadows are
the Guild associates who wish to assist the work of the Guild without being
known as such. Only the Guild leaders will be aware of their identity.
Associates: Associate members are those who wish to
be a part of the Guild and be recognized for their contributions. These people
may be nonhealers who merely wish to help the Guild by being bodyguards,
merchants, and so on.
Members: These are
people who wish to dedicate their lives to the service of the people of
Ashbury, whether healers or not. These people give meaning to the word noble
beyond a title to bow to. Through my years I have learned that one can easily
be a “noble” and yet not be noble in one’s heart.
Guildsmen: Guildsmen
are the healers with responsibilities to the Guild beyond mere membership. They
are expected to donate a quarter of their healing skills to any in need,
whether known to them or not, as well as serve guild duty. Guildsmen will
assist in battles, dragging those in need of healing to safety and constantly
fighting against the evil of necromancy. I could go on, but it should be clear
that I am talking about the real heroes of Ashbury, who rarely get rewarded for
the important job they serve to protect our lands.
Senior Guildsman: Having
surpassed the requirement of Guildmsan, these members are also invested in the
Healer’s Guild Circle. A Senior Guildsman can use the “Anvil” when accompanied
by a Guild Head. They are required to perform Guild dutyand are expected to
donate half of their healing resources to the people of Ashbury, whether known
to them or not.
Guild Head: These people
have surpassed their duties and are share responsibilities, training and
business opportunities with the Senior Guild Head, subject only to the Senior
Guild Head’s decisions. They also get free services from the tavern (within
reason).
Senior Guild Head: The coin
stops here!
There are some policy changes
you will see in the Guild:
Citizens are allowed to stay
in the “Haven” quarters under the following requirements:
You must assist in the setup
and cleaning of the Guild when needed;
You must assist healers on
the battlefield;
You must protect Healers
Guild members whenever possible;
You must follow the laws of
Ashbury;
You must bathe each morning
(at least);
You must keep your area
clean;
You must at least be an
Associate of the Guild.
Those who contact the Guild
at least four days in advance of their arrival will also receive a party
invitation.
Obviously, anyone endorsing
necromancy, breaking the law, bringing dishonor to te Guild or abusing their
stay will be removed from the Guild and will suffer the consequences of our
displeasure.
I want to make the next point
very clear: We are a business first and a charity only when we so choose.
No Guild member will be
required to use their spells or potions in any specific manner. A healer’s
spells are their responsibility, and simply because someone is a member of the
Guild does not allow the average citizen to order, demand, or expect constant
healing. This is especially true for those experienced and rich adventurers who
expect poor healers to constantly keep them alive without compensation. That
time is over.
The Guild will charge 3
silvers per level of any potion or elixir we have available and will purchase
them for 15 coppers per level when we need them. We are under no obligation to
do so, however.
We will also sell wine and
fine desserts.
Healing is expected to be
compensated at 5 coppers per level of the spell, and protectives at 2 silver
per level of the spell.
Resurrections will cost ten
silver (no gold or copper accepted).
Healer’s Guild Rules:
1. No adventurer leaves the
resurrection circle unless their fee is paid. There will be exceptions for poor
townspeople and those who have donated to the Guild in the past to cover such
needs and whose name appears on our “Wall of Fame.”
2. Calm will be maintained in
the Guild at all times. If you are too loud or unruly, you may be physically
restrained and removed.
3. Anyone casting celestial
spells on biata or vansir will have the verbal thrashing of their lives and
will earn my disrepect. This also goes for dominates on mystic wood elves,
giving catnip to a gorbe, or laughing gas to a stone elf. You will probably
earn a spot on the “Wall of Shame” for such actions.
The Wall of Shame contains a
list of Ashbury citizens who:
Steal from other citizens
Do not compensate healers
properly, including when the healer assists in the kill of monsters (I don’t
care if the healer “only cast one binding spell” -- without that spell, you
would not have killed the monster).
Dishonor the Guild
Steal from kills
Dishonor the nobles,
especially His Grace
Cast or approve of necromancy
You can remove yourself from
this list once placed upon it but it will be very difficult
The Wall of Fame lists
citizens who:
Are always fair and honorable
concerning treasure
Make big donations to the
Healer’s Guild
Are noble in heart
Those on this list will earn
our everlasting respect. (But we will only bow to the nobles!)
I am not unreasonable. I am
just tired of real healers being treated as doormats by adventurers who
expect services without even a thanks. I will stand by my Guild, its members,
and what it stands for. The Guild is obviously more concerned with preserving
life than we are with gold, but the abuse of healers will stop now.
Those who wish to join the
Guild, as well as former members who wish to rejoin, may contact me for more
details.
Vampire Lochaber
Attacks
The Galanthian vampire Matros
Lochaber was once again seen in Ashbury late on the evening of May 20th. He at
first tried to keep his identity unknown as he searched for the High Orc Raksa.
When it was later revealed who he was, he stated he was seeking vengeance on
Raksa for his past interference.
Many Ashbans pursued Lochaber
and chased him out of town, but he soon returned with several red, translucent
figures that Ashbans have taken to calling “Blood Gaunts.” This small force kept many of Ashbury’s
stoutest nobles and adventurers on their heels for quite some time and turning
several into mindless thralls that attacked their own allies.
Through some fast thinking by
then-Sir Rorii and Scarn, the vampire was brought low, but he dissipated before
either a Stake of Woe or Book of the Dawn could be utilized upon him. The Blood
Gaunts were also dispatched.
Strange Being Visits
A being known only as “The
Merchant” has been observed in
Ashbury quite recently, selling odd merchandise for exorbitant prices. The Merchant is a creature of unknown
origin, and he was reported on at least one occasion to have left Cariosus on
things he has touched.
The Merchant has made wild
claims regarding his origin, age and mist-traveling ability. None of these claims can be verified,
but he should be considered dangerous.
Coronation in Galanthia
During the annual Tournament,
a messenger delivered invitations to several prominent Ashbury nobles, citizens
and adventurers to the coronation oaf “Empress Arienne I.”
If any of these people
attended is unknown at this time. It has been reported however that on Sunday
June 5, 605, the vampiress Arienne was indeed crowned Empress of Glanthia in
the city of Galanthia Major in front of a crowd possibly numbering over a
hundred thousand. The crowd seemed quite pleased and thunderous applause were
said to have been heard for miles.
Moxis the Heartseeker, a high
ranking member of the Devorra, placed the imperial crown upon Arienne’s head.
The vampire Lochaber was seen close to Arienne at all times, and seemed to
receive as much adulation as she. It is said a grand reception and dinner
unrivalled in the history of Galanthia was held afterwards.
Thrust Visits MWEs
During the annual Tournament,
the satyr known as Thrust paid a visit to the city of Ashbury. He spent quite some time frolicking
with the mystic wood elves; then told them of his recent travels. Apparently, he had been to the islands
previously inhabited by the Children of Camulous; where he was attacked by
Vaccaren pirates. He was healed
and cared for by Children of Camulous that had been hiding on the islands. According to Thrust, at least one
island has been overrun by the pirates.
He has agreed to help the
Children because, as rumor
has it, he wants to be adopted by them.
The child of Camulous, Zephrin, has been organizing some sort of
scouting party and Kerrigwen seems to be spending much time speaking with the
nobles of Ashbury. No other
details have been forthcoming.
Mage’s Guild Report
by William Lenox, Guildmaster
After the recent unpleasant
events, the Mage’s Guild is rebuilding. I am very pleased to announce that we
have several new apprentices to the guild, including Taji Shokuma of House
Ryujima, Simon Neville, Madeline Thimblefoot, Squire Glorianna Wyndancer,
Lauroc DerWyvrenhaus, and Bleyk Schatten-jager.
I look forward to working and
sharing knowledge with each of you. They have each been assigned tasks, and
thus far are performing well.
In addition, many of you met
Fantus recently. He is an elemental changeling. He is not malicious, and will
not attack anybody, however he will defend himself if attacked (as would
you I’m sure). My sincerest apologies once again to His Grace for Fantus’ untimely
rifting during the Tournament.
If you are in need of ritual
services, teaching, scrolls, spell ink, identifications, Wards, Wizard Locks,
or other magical services, stop by the Guildhouse, just across the road from
the Dragon’s Flagon.
Individuals interested in
joining the guild may make an appointment for an interview via missive. All
applicants must at least be able to read scrolls in order to be
considered.
A Little Birdie Told Me
by Sue D’Onym
Well, let’s see, what’s the
latest News They Don’t Want You to Know?
The Elven Prince Gilthalion
was once again seen visiting Ashbury City. He seems to spend a lot of time with the court of the Ash
Forest…especially Squire Daralasia. She seems to blush quite a bit when the prince is
around. Baron Rorii seems
to be much too busy to even notice, however.
Now ex-Baroness Glen
was proud as could be about Rorii being made baron, and she actually looked
relieved to be heading back to the Wold with her significant other, a beautiful
Amani ranger. “Well, that explains why the Love potions never seemed to work on
her,” one frustrated suitor was heard to mumble.
Speaking of Rorii, he Sir
Rorii burst into the Dragon’s Flagon recently and started walking down the
stairs, loudly proclaiming “The man in the black hood is in fact the vampire Lochaber.
Be careful as he is very dangerous!” An unseen figure in the corner pulled down
a hood and said “Really? How dangerous is he?” I am told the tavern cleared
very quickly as soon as everyone realized who the being in the hood was!
A Lord and Lady of Home were
recently spotted in Ashbury City, and strangely they were not hoblings but
mystic wood elves. Lord Xander,
Lady Taryn and their friend Neala seemed to quite enjoy spending
time with the unseelie fey Lord Faust and his gaggle, even going so far
as to rift out with them. Even
this columnist does not wish to speculate on what may have happened or where
they went.
Under the Blythedale banner,
Sir Jonathan once considered Lord Du’Gaul his brother in arms;
that was before Du’Gaul’s actions
got in the way of Jonathan’s political agenda. The two do not seem very close
any more. Lord Jonathan has a new group he now leads called the Order of the
Argent Gryphon, whatever that is.
Jonathan was bragging about
“being able to take anything that’s thrown at him, so Kerrigan plopped
an entire tray of fudge in front of him. He won’t make that boast again!
You know, no one is much
talking about why Du’Gual resigned, but apparently it happened when His Grace
Sir Frost appeared at Du’Gual’s door early one morning.
Has Michiko gone
insane? Michiko has sporadically left incoherent obscure message within the
dream realm, Garra has vanished and Tetsu is wondering why his
uncle Rock has not committed suicide over the guilt of abandoning his
brother. However, Glorianna received a Sprit Farewell Scroll for Aldric
sent via messenger through Michiko’s Caldaria connections; it seems that
Michiko, even in her delusional state, is still a valuable friend.
That Lauroc certainly
has his fingers in every pie. Not only is he Assistant Guildmaster of the
Healer’s Guild in Ashbury, and member of the Healer’s Guild as well as a
Sheriff in Canning, now he’s an apprentice to the Ashbury Mage’s Guild too?
What’s he going to join next ... the Thieve’s Guild?
It would seem that Sparticous
is unstoppable in a one on one fight, but falters against a greater number
of adversaries; which is great for the hero’s combat portion of the Tournament,
but could be the reason why he keeps resurrecting in wave battles.
Daedric has
disappeared, looking to solve the fate of his fellow Lempurs, while being
constantly taunted by Sylva. Many adventurers have vowed to help, but so
far no one seems to know what to do.
Remember, if you don’t send
your gossip to me, it doesn’t get reported. So until next time, remember: If you can’t say something
nice about someone, come sit by me.
