"Mirror Master" Defeated by Consortium of Heroes

A powerful being calling herself "The Mirror Master" was recently defeated by a brave contingent of Ashbury citizens working together, but the triumph was tempered by tragedy, as many lost their lives in the struggle.

The people of Ashbury first learned of the Mirror Master after meeting a group of elderly adventurers who claimed to have defeated her over 65 years ago. Jonathan Honeybrew, Jansing the Oracle, Jimmy the Snake and Ol' Dogsled had been wandering around the capital city for the past few months, readying themselves for a return showdown with their nemesis. Jansing had foreseen that the Mirror Master was planning something of great evil that could cause great harm to Ashbury and pose a threat to all of Tyrra. She warned that a confrontation was soon coming. By Friday, June 17th, a number of strange creatures began appearing throughout the city, emerging from mirrors and mirrored surfaces. The heroes knew that the time was near. They spoke at great length with those who would listen - primary among them were Baron Morgan Blackbourne and his squires.

Unfortunately, the human heroes (now greatly aged), often were incoherent and fell asleep easily. Baron Morgan pressed Ol' Dogsled for details regarding their first battle with the Mirror Master but he grew increasingly frustrated as the old adventurer constantly became distracted by those around him.

Eventually, it was learned that over 60 years ago, in the upper reaches of Evendarr, the Mirror Master had been conducting some sort of ritual to free an entity that communicated with her through a mirror. The ritual was haphazardly opening rifts through which a number of beasts issued.

This disruption caught the attention of the then-young adventurers who went to investigate. Details became fuzziest at this point as Jansing claimed to have gypsy cursed the Mirror Master to interrupt the ritual, while Jonathan Honeybrew claimed that a swarm of bees flew through the Mirror Master's circle of power and stung her repeatedly. Ol' Dogsled merely stated that the sly Jimmy the Snake had somehow distracted the Mirror Master long enough to disrupt the ritual.

In any event, the ritual was interrupted and a great explosion blinded the heroes. All that was left of the Mirror Master and her evil mirror was a smudge on the ground. The heroes were triumphant.

Baron Morgan implored the elderly heroes to leave the next confrontation of the Mirror Master to younger adventurers such as himself.

Meanwhile, a strange being calling himself Rigel was wandering the city "observing." He claimed that he was not allowed to interfere with the actions of those living on "this plane" but his actions belittled his words. It was determined that he was an Aspect of Order and a creature made of celestial magics and that he was very concerned that the actions of the Mirror Master were disrupting the natural "order" of the planes. He would not give any details as to how to defeat the Mirror Master, nor would he explain exactly what the Mirror Master was doing (if indeed he knew) but he was obviously observing citizens in search of those he felt to be "orderly."

He spoke against war, arguments, necromancy, and other disruptive factions that were not "orderly" and eventually, he touched eight individuals who apparently passed his tests. Each of the eight then sported an infinity symbol on their foreheads. Rigel would not say what the symbol meant.

The eight "chosen" were Aloryn Runeweaver, Britannia, Derek Du'Leges, Kelial Vardik, Lithitar Drakker, Meshak Zooben, Unrok, and Vaeyne. Meanwhile, many more strange beings and aspects were appearing throughout the area, emerging from mirrors and other shiny surfaces. One being even appeared from an adventurer's suit of armor. The adventurer immediately ran outside and covered his shiny new armor with dirt and mud to prevent such an action from reoccurring.

Among the new creatures seen was a strange being known as Bach, who apparently was an aspect of wine and alcohol. Several local citizens known as AAA (Ashbury Against Alcohol) turned out to discourage adventurers from presenting gifts to the so-called "Ale Elemental." While none were killed, several were apparently waylaid by a group lead by Sheriff Blade. Blade was then found guilty of castrating one of the protesters and had to pay him restitution. Meanwhile, Bach, with one wave of his mighty hand, poisoned all of the alcohol in the area, greatly angering many tavernkeepers.

Not surprisingly, the Neumachts encouraged the barony of Trellheim to hold a large party to encourage Bach to once again restore the alcohol to its previous state. They danced and sang and caroused, attracting the attention of Bach who stated that the party was a good as anything he had ever seen in Volta. He restored the alcohol in Ashbury, and was immediately killed by members of the Trellheim court.

Shortly after 9:00 that Saturday night, while Dax the Gypsy was busy winning the Gunther's Knee Liar's Competition in the Dragon's Flagon, something equally exciting was happening in the Mages' Guild. Jansing the Oracle returned to town bearing the news that the old heroes had recovered a mirror which Jansing's seeress' sight told her was important to the battle against the Mirror Master and had to be identified immediately.

While Caliandros and Britannia warned that mirrors could be dangerous as creatures kept appearing out of them, Shalizar discussed the price of identifying the mirror with the vocal oracle. Shalizar covered the mirror to mask its reflective nature and began the identification. In the midst of the identification, a man-sized, black creature with no facial features and what appeared to be star glowing within it suddenly appeared within the circle shouting "I AM FREE!!" loudly enough to empty the tavern into the Mages' Guild hall.

When Shalizar asked the creature what it was, it appeared confused and muttered something about "not hearing a name for a long time." It eventually identified itself as "Pulsar."

Shalizar was then heard to ask the creature if it was truly made entirely out of Celestial Magic - as she had identified it to be. The grim-faced sorceress" eyes lit up like a child's when Pulsar confirmed her belief. She wanted Pulsar to stay and talk, but he had other plans. Several members of the "Chosen" then appeared before Pulsar, who quickly identified their marking. Pulsar expressed a great deal of interest in walking beneath the stars and spoke to the Chosen as he did so. The Chosen asked Pulsar what he could tell them of their enemy. Pulsar was unable to reveal a great deal as he, like Rigel, was apparently restricted from interfering with the dealings of mortals. He did inform the Chosen that the mark upon their brows served as a "preparation" for a ritual. What ritual, Pulsar did not know, but he was certain that his nemesis Visumbra (an Aspect of Chaos) would have a barrier surrounding the Mirror Master's stronghold and that the Chosen would have to be prepared in order to pass through it.

He also expressed some disgruntlement with Rigel, especially Rigel's advice to the town that all the elementals had to be destroyed. Pulsar seemed especially concerned that a being known as Random Chance had been destroyed, warning town that it might have been a grave mistake. Pulsar walked about the town and greatly startled Otto Neumacht when he approached the door of the Manor House, reached out, and dropped the Ward by fitting his hand to the Ward key. He briefly expressed the need to rally forces against Visumbra, then departed. Eventually he wound back to the Mages' guild, casually entered the circle of power, and performed a spirit walk to an unknown destination.

The next morning, a warning came from a citizen that a number of undead had been seen in a cave past the city's boundaries. The people of Ashbury correctly deduced that this could be the sign they were looking for. A large group of adventurers headed toward the cave, led by barons Bryan and Morgan (Baron Thomas was busy fighting what was apparently a gryphon in human form and Baroness Laurelin was back in the Ash Forest dealing with problems in Entholm).

Once inside the cave, the brave heroes of Ashbury fought wave after wave of undead. The undead were emerging from behind a glowing barrier that none could pass - none except those marked by Rigel.

The battle in the cave continued as the Chosen passed through the barrier into another room where they fought their way past a number of guardians. Eventually, they discovered the Mirror Master performing a ritual.

The Circle surrounding the Mirror Master also contained a mirror. Inside the mirror was a hideous being that the Chosen assumed was Visumbra. It was obvious that the Mirror Master was about to release the foul creature.

The Mirror Master had apparently been badly corrupted by her interaction with the chaos being, and she wavered back and forth, kept shifting her attention and was obviously acting as chaotic as Pulsar and Rigel acted orderly.

The Chosen were eventually able to disrupt the ritual by distracting the Mirror Master to such a degree that the ritual was ruined. They coerced her to lower the Circle, and as she did, the mirror shattered and the Mirror Master went from being conciliatory to aggressive--and a major battle ensued.

Eventually, the Mirror Master was captured and the Chosen led her from the cave.

Upon exiting through the barrier, the Chosen discovered a horrible site--bodies laid strewn about, and the battle with the undead continued. Prominent among the battlers was Mother Merry of Evendarr who apparently had decided that the Sanctuary spell wasn't that bad after all.

It appeared that the destruction of the mirror had stopped the waves of undead from continuing, so as soon as the last few were defeated, the brave heroes of Ashbury ran to their fallen companions. Among those who were in need of a Life spell were Otto and Wilhelm Neumacht, Morlox Nightshade, Thengor the dwarf, and quite a few of Baron Bryan's squires. The Mirror Master was killed as she threw necromancy at one of the fallen.

All of the fallen heroes were resurrected successfully, and the Duchess publicly thanked them for the valiant effort to protect the citizens of Ashbury. The Chosen were also singled out for thanks.

Baron Bryan and Magistrate Aloryn Temporarily Removed of Titles

Many citizens of Ashbury were shocked by the announcement by Duchess Mara Tirane that, pending the results of her investigation in the matter, Baron Bryan Nordenn and Lord Magistrate Aloryn Runeweaver would both be removed of their positions. The action would continue until she assesses the allegations and actions of both parties brought to her.

During an open audience to the town, the Paladins had just passed squires Justice and magistrate Aloryn through the Tests of Chivalry when Baron Bryan stepped forth with a serious accusation against the magistrate. He claimed that not one hour before, Aloryn had disobeyed a direct order from Baron Bryan. Both Barons Thomas and Morgan stepped forth as well in support of their fellow Baron.

The accusation was based upon an incident earlier in the day when a great many of the town's powerful combatants followed Pulsar, an order elemental, into a great cave to stop a rampant chaos elemental named Visumbra. Aloryn was one of the "chosen," as the people in town selected by order elementals to stop the chaos elemental were called. They emerged victorious later and brought back the Mirror Master with them. Baron Bryan spoke to Aloryn and determined that the Mirror Master was a caster of some ability and ordered Aloryn to free the Mirror Master from the Web that contained her so that she could cast Life spells on the fallen heroes. Aloryn refused.

"I attempted to explain the situation since the Baron had no way of knowing, but he did not even allow me to continue," stated Aloryn. "He harried me with taunts, threats, curses, and proclaiming himself the second highest ranking noble, said that I must obey him."

Great pandemonium ensued. Sir Thyren got involved and apparently supported Aloryn. Baron Bryan stated that if the fallen were to die, then Aloryn would be responsible. His squires meanwhile kept looking to their Baron, asking "Shall we drop him?" The tensions were high as the clock kept ticking for the dying.

Eventually, Aloryn released the Mirror Master. The Mirror Master leaned over the fallen heroes and threw not a Life spell but a necromantic spell. She fell quickly from the blows from many swords.

The court of Nordenn then criticized Aloryn for not killing the Mirror Master in the first place.

Baron Bryan then pulled the magistrate aside and told him that he was not pleased with the public display of disobedience. He told him that even though Aloryn was not one of his squires, whenever a Baron orders him to do something, he must obey without argument.

"Baron Bryan's interpretation of the laws is correct," stated local legal expert Quentin Dunbury, "but I admit the laws are not as well written as they should be in dealing with this situation."

Baron Bryan was thoroughly disgusted that Lord Aloryn passed the Paladin's tests after what he saw as such a clear case of disrespect towards nobility. He suggested that his title be removed.

At the public meeting, the sides were clearly drawn as the Barons stood on one side and Aloryn and the other Chosen stood on the other. Sir Hieronymous and Sir Thyren stood with the Duchess, quietly discussing the situation.

Duchess Mara stated that she was not pleased with these accusations. She first temporarily removed the position of magistrate from Lord Aloryn. He asked if she was going to remove his new title too, and she responded that it wasn't necessary yet.

But what profoundly shocked and dumbfounded many of the townspeople was her next action. She told Baron Bryan that, of late, she was not pleased with the stories she's been hearing about his actions in this and other affairs. The Duchess then said that until she can verify whether or not he was of sound mind and body that he, too, would be temporarily removed of his title.

Until she had investigated this matter fully, she placed Sir Angus McEwan as acting baron of Nordenn. While initially reticent of this responsibility, Sir Angus accepted the position after Bryan insisted. Squire Sethric Nordenn was very upset at the Duchess' accusations against his brother. He stood up and publicly announced that he wished never to be anything but a squire. The Duchess told him to sit down and ordered that no one else attempt to obtain such a rash audience with her. Later Sethric was overheard arguing with Sir Thyren that as the brother of Baron Bryan, he should have been named acting Baron. "You can't remain a squire and be acting Baron!" said Sir Thyren.

At that same public meeting, Sir Bryan asked for but one more unrelated public announcement. He called to attention former magistrate Lornlin and asked him to remove the infamous mask he is never seen without. He complied and the town stood speechless as the face revealed made it clear that Lornlin was related to the infamous ex-Duke Alaric Dragonhart. Sir Bryan asked that we not judge him on his cousin's deeds and that we all must protect him, for Lornlin has been hiding from Alaric all this time as well. The town agreed, for Lornlin has been quite an asset in many instances since his cousin's departure.

Fire Ants Invade Ashbury (Again)

On Saturday morning, the 18th of June, a large trail of smoke and ash passed by Ashbury city and drifted over Lake Hollym. Three white spherical objects floated down into the town square. Sir Hieronymous, Squire Sonya, and Lornlin Darque immediately began rounding up the objects to find out their origin.

The capsules seemed to be egg shaped in nature and Sir Hieronymous ordered that two be brought to the edge of town. He cracked open one to discover that it was a queen fire ant egg that had been boiled to death by immense heat. He ordered Sonya and Lornlin to return the eggs. With healing arts, they determined that all the unborn ants were all dead, probably in the same condition.

Sir Hieronymous then put the unopened eggs in Nordenn's quarters for safe keeping.

Later in the afternoon, several waves of giant fire ants came into town looking for these missing eggs. They were defeated, but more kept coming. Soon it became obvious that the ants were searching for the eggs. Once the ants obtained their objective, they quickly left town. Later in the evening a farmer hired a party of adventurers led by Caliandros of Blythedale to help him get rid of a drunken ogre on his property. They had tracked the creature through the woods to a small glen where he had been roasting on an open fire another of the fire ant eggs. Before they could dispatch the creature, the egg hatched and a baby fire ant immediately killed the ogre.

It then bonded to the group and followed them into town. They fed the creature and kept it away from other townspeople, who tended to be initially frightened by such monsters. Its eyes periodically glowed red as if something was communicating with it. This grabbed the attention of Wilhelm Neumacht, who had been studying it.

He argued with the queen's caretakers that if they didn't kill it now, it would surely grow up to be a menace to the town. The group were not eager to kill it yet, so Wilhelm went to Baron Thomas of Blythedale and reported of the creatures' existence in town. Baron Thomas agreed that the creature was too dangerous to keep around and ordered its destruction.

Unfortunately, the town had a few more giant ant visitors the next morning, only this time they were far more vicious. Perhaps they detected the death of their baby queen and were lashing out in revenge. There were reports early Friday before the trouble with the ants from a traveling merchant named Lyle Nyberg. He claimed to see a volcanic eruption in southern Trellheim and many large red insects in the area. The royal army went to investigate and found a small volcanic fault in Battlewoods that had erupted. It was so far away from any towns that the eruption went almost unnoticed. The army also found many dead giant fire ants in the area. They guessed that the colony of ants must have made a home in the fault before the eruption and that this disaster destroyed most of their colony and queen.

Petal Collects "Fey"vors from Local Adventurers

The ffolk known as Petal was seen wandering through Ashbury recently trying to collect "favors" from those who she claimed owed them to her. She warned all that those who owed the favors would have to pay up or the entire town would be cursed.

Apparently, the victims had to collect pieces of a magical ward key and present them to Petal or else fight in a game she called "Steal the Brownies' Treasure."

She gathered up Radric, Wilhelm, Otto, Sonya, Morlox, Anakin, Vayne, Hanson, Thengor and Sir Hieronymous and set off into the woods, carrying a magical doorway. She warned all others not to follow.

The townspeople refused to comply, and Petal dropped the doorframe over Hieronymous, who immediately disappeared. Petal said that she would not return Hieronymous until everyone obeyed her rules, and eventually everyone did.

She then entered the door herself and exited immediately, carrying a magical two-handed sword with the words "I love you" embedded in its blade. She was being chased by several creatures and she ordered her "players" to kill the things. They did.

She then thanked them and gave the magical sword to Radric, who was the only one capable of using it. The sword has a definite curse attached, as Radric now tends to spout out insults, bark like a dog and otherwise interrupt at the worst moments with bits of nonsense - none of which he claims to ever remember. He also has been the subject of many attacks from brownies, who say "That's our sword" and "We love you, Radric" as they attempt to kill him.

Petal returned Sir Hieronymous back to Ashbury later that day. Sir Hieronymous stated that when he appeared in the land of the fairy ffolk, he suffered from amnesia. He stated that he eventually remembered himself and his life but forgot his skills and began to learn new ones. He could no longer recall how to use many of the weapons he once used with ease, but instead he now knew many new spells.

He also stated that he had spent over 15 years with the fey and in some ways, it had calmed him down and made him less confrontational. Others who spoke to him afterwards agreed about the Paladin's new demeanor. One observer also commented that Sir Hieronymous now felt about brownies the way that he used to feel about necromancers.

The Ratcatcher's Folly

A dirty man in rags calling himself The Ratcatcher crept into the town square recently and began setting fire traps there. Magistrate Aloryn Runeweaver and Baron Thomas were quick to point out to this stranger that it was inappropriate and illegal to do so.

The Ratcatcher, whose lack of bathing was apparent, argued that he had Ducal authority. He later admitted that it was Duchess Gwendolyn Songbringer who made him official vermin exterminator many years ago. Without proof of his claim, he was told that he could not arbitrarily set up traps in the middle of town.

He was very upset and kept repeating that the rats would surely come at any time and they would all regret not letting him set up his traps. No one believed his story, and they kept preventing him from his task. It was felt by all observers that this man was out of his mind, for when he wasn't rambling that he alone knows where and when the rats will strike, he would be periodically making rat-like facial gestures.

Ratcatcher's frustration soon ended when giant rats came out of the woodwork and invaded the town square. He gleefully cheered out "I told you! I told you this would happen!"

After successfully destroying the rats, the townspeople were eager to help Ratcatcher set up his traps, but it was too late. He said the danger was over and he had to move on. He packed his goods and left town saying what a complete waste of his time this whole affair had been.

Nimani Paladin Attacked in Ashbury; Assassin Set Free

Nimani Paladin Arianna Therenberg was attacked by an assassin during her recent visit to Ashbury. The assassin, a biata known only as "Sera" was allowed to leave, and Dame Arianna left in disgust herself soon thereafter.

Dame Arianna had stated earlier in the day that she knew there were assassins out to get her and that she suspected Sera, but that she couldn't dispense justice in Ashbury so she'd have to wait until there was an attempt and deal with it when it happened.

It happened in public, in plain view of many witnesses. Sera lobbed many gas globes at Dame Arianna and her squire, and then ran off. She was caught minutes later by an alert Sir Thyren.

Lord Magistrate Aloryn Runeweaver heard Sera's story, confiscated her possessions, and then let her go. When he was angrily asked later why he let an assassin leave, he stated that none of the witnesses spoke to him about the case until after he had let her go.

Dame Arianna, a sarr, was not making her presence in Ashbury too well known. It is possible that she was once again in the city to search for escaped criminals (which is usually Niman's way of saying "escaped slaves.").

It is known that she left angrily after discovering that her assassin had been set free. Other witnesses to the crime also seemed surprised by the light sentence, and Baron Thomas was heard to comment that the situation needed investigating.

Crazed Alchemist Creates Killer Plants

A strange woman was seen outside of the Dragon's Flagon recently, spraying plants with an unknown liquid. Many citizens just walked on by assuming she was a gardener for the tavern, but Necros inquired as to her intentions. She seemed secretive and skittish and refused to let Necros take some of her concoction. She claimed that she was merely tending the plants. Later it was discovered that one of the ingredients of the mixture was blood.

Later that day, the plants came to life and threw webbing attacks and otherwise hindered and attacked passerby. They were easily defeated once people realized that the attacks were coming from the plants.

Giovanni the Alchemist, offering to help, met with Squire Hawkwing late Saturday night and gave him several "Defoliant Gas Toxins" that he claimed would destroy these plant creatures. Hawkwing never had a chance to try the gases, and both the defoliants and the plants apparently became impotent on Sunday.

The flamboyant Alchemist claimed that the plant creatures were created by his longtime rival Marielle the Alchemist, who could easily be identified because "She gotta crazy accenta, I canta understanda thinga she say!"

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

The time has come to honor the Barons of Ashbury. On June 19, 594, the Barons grew up. They all worked together and agreed on something: that they are not getting enough respect. The Duchess, the Paladins, and the majority of the commoners had enough of the bickering between them.

The time has come to honor the Barons of Ashbury. On the very same day, Morgan and Bryan fought hand in hand, shared their magical weapons and their courts to fight a great evil, and to once again save the Duchy in its hour of need. Five great warriors died to aid them, five that could have been saved. However, within the five minute period, an order was given by a Baron to a squire and it was only followed by his insolence. The creature that may have Lifed the warriors had her mind shattered, and she went into a necromantic frenzy. The squire and his travelers still after this tried to stop a Paladin from administering justice by knocking away his sword in the middle of a killing blow. This is not respect.

It's time to honor the Barons of Ashbury, for they went back to town and together asked for respect from the squire and justice for his actions. The Duchess had what she wanted - all the Barons together. Once she had that, in front of commoners, nobles, and all those that fall in between, she removed Bryan Nordenn, her biggest supporter. The Baron with the largest, most loyal court, and the highest popularity within his estates was stripped for a wacky "biata" rage according to the Duchess. On the words of a few people concerned about whether or not his mind was altered by Gwendolyn, the Duchess disgraced his honor. It had nothing to do with whether or not he was doing his job--he obviously did it better than anyone. It was a racial thing. So now, for the first time since 487, a Nordenn does not run the Barony.

So be careful what you wish for, on June 19, we got it and it didn't come out the way it should have. For on that day a Baron got moved down to knight and that squire got promoted to Lord.

Are my words treason? I don't know but I would rather go to death for what I believe is right than live in disgrace knowing that I didn't have the courage to speak up. So tip your hat to a Baron of Ashbury--they all have my high respect.

Squire Setheric Merrick Vardik Naultik Nordenn

The Real News

by Cleo Smith

There are a few new women adventurers in town and as usual, they're getting more than their fair share of attention. The first I'll mention is Lady Talia Grey. Warning: Approach with caution. Baron Thomas Grey is extremely protective of his "sister." He shouldn't worry so much though--Sir Tsubatai seems more than willing to watch out for her when the baron is unavailable. Except for that one time when they were way, way off in the field by themselves. They weren't paying attention to their surroundings and were caught by surprise by a few orcs and trolls! (Luckily, some of the townspeople came and rescued the two of them.)

Gwynne Neumacht has been turning heads lately. Recently her cousin Wilhelm was heard debating with Squire Sethric Nordenn the conditions of a possible marriage. Especially important were the kinds of presents (and their potential value). In the end however, Wilhelm reluctantly agreed that the decision to marry was his cousins'.

It would be ironic for Wilhelm to decide anything regarding someone else's marriage when he can't even make a decision for himself about his own marriage. It seems the closer he gets to his own wedding, the colder his feet become. His cousins are continually chastising him for his "stupidity."

The Neumachts aren't the only group with problems. When questioned about his own Barony (Nordenn), Nicadaemus Gotham responded and added "Don't quote me as a source please; there's much strife within the barony." He tells me that Sethric wears feetie pajamas. I'll bet that gets Gwynne's attention for you, Sethric!

The Town Guard looks more than a little confused. When asked about Sheriff Kelson's role in its running, Derek Dreamweaver despondently remarked "He's the leader. . .I guess." Blade has been the acting sheriff in Kelson's absence--the perfect position for a man who readily admits "Police brutality is not a crime in Ashbury." If all this worries you, then do what I did - if you can't beat them, join them. Besides, I'm sure they'll never notice an extra member or two (trust me on this).

One more thing before I go: Baron Thomas has a hole in his pants.
