Obelisk Destroyed;  Tyrannos Permanently Slain

Earlier in the month of the Hawk, a large stone obelisk erupted from the ground in the town of Fairdale on the edge of the contested lands. The inscription on this obelisk, known as the Phoebus Vitiate, warned of vampires increasing in power, and the extermination of life as we know it.

When the adventurers returned later this month, the obelisk appeared to have grown stronger, and was projecting a Domain of the Defiled in a radius around itself, preventing all living things from approaching it. Now in addition to vampires who touched it being strengthened, spectral undead began issuing from the obelisk itself.

On Friday night a group of Galanthians entered the tavern wishing to speak to the nobles present. They claimed to be from a faction of Galanthians led by Darress Vale who did not wish to be ruled by vampires and were rebelling against Arienne and Lochaber. They offered one half of a prophecy which was rumored to have the information needed to destroy the Phoebus Vitiate, and possibly the vampires as well. In exchange for the other half of the prophecy, they requested caches of weapons and potions with which to fuel their rebellion.

The assembled scholars then set to the task of decoding the first half of the prophecy, while the nobles debated on how to handle the Galanthian situation. Aria Devonshire, Aaeun Nimbus, Aislynn Ravenshire, Ezri Silverthorn, Dame Glorianna Wyndancer, and Shya Corak spent many hours pouring through old issues of the Ashbury Times, several books, and the prophesy itself trying to make heads or tails of it. Aria also had a vision ritual of her own to decipher – one which included a vampire who was not only able to sense her presence but speak to her – something highly unusual for a vision ritual. In the vision she saw several ritual scrolls a book a stake and a weapon all laid on a table, though at the time nobody knew what that meant.

The adventurers assembled had many mixed feelings about dealing with the Galanthians, but in the end it was decided that if they truly would be fighting against Arienne and Lochaber as well, that the supplies were a small price to pay for the information. Even still, the adventurers seemed unwilling to part with the needed weapons, until Squire Ulthoc swore to replace all weapons donated with fresh ones from his forge.  The lion’s share of the weapons were donated by the adventuring group known as the Stormblades, with the remaining missing pieces collected form the Baronial Courts and other adventuring groups.  With the whole prophesy in hand Aria’s vision became clearer: the prophecy gave instructions on how to create a Penumbra Blade – a sword which could destroy the Phoebus Vitiate, and one of the vampires, but only one of them.

Of course, the attacks did not cease while the research was going on. And the adventurers received some help in an unusual form. Sir Madric, the knight of legend cursed to a form somewhere between life and undeath, appeared in town. He knew much of the Academy of the Dawn, and had located three crypts of Tyrranos the Bloodbather, which might hold information needed to destroy Lochaber and Arienne. He assembled groups of adventurers to go and investigate.

The first group consisted of Baron Rorii of the Ash Forest, Aria Devonshire, Lieutenant Ithica and the Amani elves Aislynn Ravenshire, Ezri Silverthorn and Qualin Brightoak. They entered a dark, dank crypt which was littered with body parts and guarded by powerful undead. The group was able to dispatch of the undead but a second room which housed a large tomb was also riddled with traps. No one was able to disarm the traps, so Aria volunteered to take the trap and move it, hoping to get it far enough away from the tomb and the rest of the group before it went off. Luckily the trap was a dud and did not fire, and they were able to open the tomb with no ill effects. Inside was one of the ritual scrolls described in the prophecy, and another copy of the prophesy itself. Unfortunately this meant that at least one of the vampires knew of the Penumbra Blade.

A second group went with Sir Madric to investigate another crypt. They unfortunately were not so lucky as the first group, and the tomb they encountered housed an elder vampire. Two of their members – Ashrik the Kiergani, and ญญญญ Alushtas the Imladari elf were forced to resurrect.  The other two crypts were also destroyed.

After noticing that his crypts had been defiled, Tyrranos the Bloodbather himself made an appearance in Fairdale, accompanied by many lesser vampires and other undead. The battle was hard fought, but the town was victorious. Several of the fighters and celestial casters managed to subdue Tyrranos, and Aislynn was able to use the Book of the Dawn to permanently slay him.

As night fell, all gathered in Fairdale seemed on edge. The adventurers were sure it couldn’t be long before Arienne appeared – and they were right. She arrived in town and went immediately to the obelisk. She seemed to investigate it, though in the dark nobody could be quite sure what exactly she was doing to it.  A bit of banter occurred between the Empress and the adventurers before the battle was joined, and it was one of the deadliest battles the town had seen in some time. Several adventurers resurrected; including Gwendara Alanick of the Stormblades, who suffered a blow from Arriene herself, using the Dagger of Morganna. It obliterated her instantly, leaving those standing beside her in a state of shock. She successfully resurrected. Morian knight Ragnar Foxfire however was permanently killed in the battle. Those present say he fell fighting bravely, protecting others.

With Tyrranos dispatched and Arienne gone for the moment, the adventurers set back to the task of deciphering the prophesy, but Aaeun could not be found to assist. The instructions seemed clear enough, but they also seemed contradictory. The prophesy called for either a true Stake of Woe or Book of the Dawn to be incorporated into newly forged silver blade, but one of the rituals needed was a Destroy Formal Magic ritual, and it was feared that if done in the wrong order that it would undo all the magic imbued rather than fuse it together. Squire Ulthoc forged the blade, and Dame Glorianna, as the only formalist able to cast rituals from both schools of magic was tapped to magically imbue it.

The final step however could not be done until the sun was at its highest point the following morning, at which point a willing sacrifice had to die and resurrect by the blade. Knowing that this was their chance to seize the weapon, Arienne and Lochaber appeared again, and once again the battle was joined. In the safety of the Haven of the Living cast upon one of the smaller buildings in town, the ritual was completed, and the willing sacrifice fell upon the Penumbra Blade, resurrecting to seal its magic.

With the weapon complete, Greysmere was able to pass through the barrier created by the Domain of the Defiled and destroy the Phoebus Vitiate. Realizing that the Penumbra Blade had indeed been made, the two vampires fled, but not before Arienne was gypsy cursed several times over, including one that made her sprout a pig’s nose. Upon its destruction, thousands of tortured souls were released from the obelisk, now able to finally rest, and as the Cloak of Darkness was also lifted, the remaining vampires were vanquished by the sun’s light.

At this time it is unclear to which vampire the Penumbra Blade has been attuned. Initial rumors seemed to lean pretty heavily toward Arienne, though some also claim that Lochaber was seen fleeing the battle with equal speed.

A large team of adventurers then set out to destroy the remaining Phoebus Vitiate with the Penumbra Blade.

Now that the threat of bestial vampires overwhelming all of the duchy and maybe even the world has been thwarted, efforts turn to rebuilding.  Untold numbers of families have lost members to permanent death and many families have been completely destroyed.  It is unknown at this time how many people were claimed by this necromantic claim, but the numbers are staggering.

A very sad population now turns to rebuilding their lives the best they can.

Shadow Ring Active in the Contested Lands

After years of laying low, The Shadow Ring has once again made itself known within the borders of Ashbury. For those who are not familiar with this organization The Shadow Ring is a “Gentlemen’s Club” of unrepentant necromancers under the leadership of Tavish Capulus (better known as Creepshow), notorious lieutenant to the vampire Loscarnos De Morganna. After the destruction of Morganna the Shadow Ring apparently went underground to nurse its wounds and presumably plot a return to power. Many hoped that this vile league had collapsed without a strong leader, but recent events in Dara’s Grace have convinced authorities that the Shadow Ring is back in business.

Over the past few weeks, undead have been shambling out of the wilderness and into populated areas, then stopping and allowing themselves to be killed. Each of these creatures carried upon them the following note:

Necromancers of Icenia,

Fabulous job opportunities await you in the Contested Lands! The Shadow Ring is looking for talented individuals for our Infiltration and Sedition programs. Applicants need only go out into Trellhiem and prove your credentials by Draining Goblins until one of our friendly staff finds you. We offer competitive wages and can guarantee that once you’re hired you will never get sick again. Join the winning team!  - H

The “H” that this note refers to is generally assumed to refer to Hadley Moonstream, slaver, necromancer and Lord of Home who is currently wanted by the hobling House of Lords to stand trial for his numerous crimes. The fact that he is using undead to carry these notes is particularly disturbing in that it implies that the Shadow Ring has sufficient reagents and necromantic ritual scrolls that it can waste them on frivolous tasks.

Squire Trevor Donovan states that the Ducal Army has been hearing reports of mindless undead roaming the Contested Lands hauling siege weapons over the past year and knows that the trolls who attacked Fairdale and Deathwatch a month ago had been reportedly in the process of negotiating a deal for some ballistae in exchange for magical components when the deal was interrupted by the adventurers of Fairdale. Hadley was forced to retreat before the deal could be concluded, but this may explain how the Shadow Ring managed to gather the resources for its recruitment campaign.

Dream Realm Turmoil

The dreams of Ashbury’s adventuring caste have recently been riddled with harsh and bitter words. Particularly there was much chatter concerning Veil KeeKoree, Lady Knight Glorianna, and Squire Ulthoc.

Apparently many are unwilling to believe Veil is on the road to redemption away from her past necromantic ways. It appears actions speak louder than words, and while she claims to be changing, her conviction of Consorting with Undead may speak otherwise. A few adventurers spoke on her behalf, stating that justice was served and punishment meted out for her actions. However, the harsh words expressed in the minds of many Ashbans were loud enough to awaken Pantzike the assistant master of the Healer’s Guild in the lands of Syrandor. He spoke of Veil’s crime in Syraandor and was particularly displeased about the removal of her necromantic mark. Many questioned how many second chances a person should be given. This line of dreaming was ended with wise words from Squire Ulthoc concerning redemption; words that are befitting of a squire and a noble of Icenia. He stated that he cannot prove who does and who does not have it in them to be redeemed. He would rather defend those not worthy of such defense and find out later he worked too hard than to fail to defend those who deserved it and in doing so fail in his duties.

The tenuous peace of the dream realm was again shattered, this time by Walgar, with stinging comments concerning Lady Knight Glorianna. He accused her of consorting with the vampire Lochaber, and claimed that this is unacceptable for the ordinary adventurer but that she must be above the law because of her belt. The Lady Knight, having been accused of this previously by Walgar, insisted that she would speak with the paladins when they were in Fairdale. She seemed to have no qualms about being brought before the paladins, and insisted that any Ashbans that were present speak their mind to the paladins. Walgar’s words brought a torrent of angry responses from many adventurers. Elyrion Nyonos pointed out that Walgar couldn’t even manage to show up in Fairdale to levy the charges, and questioned his honor by stating that Walgar was nowhere to be found when his “true friends” Gwendara and Ulthoc were caused to resurrect. Several adventurers, including Symerille and Gwendara, advised Walgar to take his grievances private and to speak with Lady Knight Glorianna directly rather than spew angry words in the dream realm. Lieutenant Ithica and Bowin Morris then interceded to try to explain the facts of the matter.

When things appeared to be on the verge of peace again, Squire Ulthoc addressed Walgar’s previous comments. He used Walgar’s childhood name, and challenged him to honor combat to avenge his Liege’s name. Walgar took offense to this name being used and accused Ulthoc of being a “sick wolf.” This shattered any hope of peaceful dreams in the near future.

Lady Knight Glorianna was appalled that Walgar would basically call her Squire a Varg. Shocked and angry words were also heard from Gwendara. Symerille pointed out that the enemies of Icenia, if they were listening to our dreams, were gaining valuable knowledge specifically, who to undermine to create chaos within the ranks. Squire Ulthoc gave a final message to Walgar, telling him his child name was used because he was acting like one. He asked many poignant questions in a hope to show Walgar the error of his ways. An arguably more level headed Gwendara challenged Walgar, her former friend, to honor combat for the slight she felt was leveled against Ulthoc and her own honor. In the end, this dreaming was calmed by healing words from Cinder. He implored us all to look past Walgar’s words and see the truth of the matter. He also encouraged the adventurers of Fairedale to stand together by showing wisdom and compassion.

The turmoil in the dreams of Ashbans is disconcerting at the very least. The enemies of Icenia can gather much information from these dreams, and it appears that the adventurers are having a difficult time presenting a unified front. One wonders when and how this problem will be corrected.

Elementals Wardens Suffer Defeat

Some of the mystery of the elemental shard which is now fused to the Mage’s Guild Circle in Fairdale has been revealed recently.  A formidable being known as Zephyl the Elemental Knight has been using the shard to call upon the celestial mages in town to assist him in restoring a balance to the elements in various places in Icenia and perhaps in other planes.  This being appears to be made up of all four of the elements most commonly recognized by the celestial magics:  Flame, Ice, Stone, and Lightning.

On a recent Saturday, the mages of the guild were summoned to the circle by the shard but made a potentially fatal error by activating its power and rifting out of town before being briefed on the nature of the enemy they were being summoned to recon with.  Strangely, the Elemental Knight was able to communicate to the mages while rifting and explained that a group of ice elementals were recently spotted in “a place they had no business being” and that the mages were being sent there to deal with them.  Instructions were given to them on how to collect the essence of the elementals by defeating them and retrieving the essence with an empty vial.  Six vials of the essence were needed (as six guild members were sent on the task), and the mages were instructed to cast evocation magic on the essence once it was in the vial to be rifted home.

Aria Devonshire, Nathan Westwind, Telokh Amdo, Ren Suzume, Squire Symerille and Aaeun Nimbus rifted into a strange icey fortress and immediately confronted by a group of ice elementals that screamed at the mages to leave, and began attacking.  Using evocation scrolls and prisons, the mages did defeat the elementals but because of the recent vampire activity the mages found themselves already in danger of totally exhausting any resources they might use to fight on further.

Essences were collected from three of the elementals but a second wave quickly descended on the recovering mages.  This battle took a turn for the worse when mages began falling, some to be brought back up by the few healers in the group, only to fall again at the might of their relentless icey foes.  The mages began to fall, and those few who could heal fell too, or were overwhelmed and unable to get to their comrades before their lifeless bodies rifted back to the guild circle in Fairdale.  Fearing defeat and the loss of the three essences they did recover, the remaining living mages cast the evocation spells upon their essences, rifting back to aid the fallen.

Healer’s Guildmistress Zaterina, ever present and ready for the unexpected, was able to quickly cast life spells on the dead mages’ bodies as they were dragged out of the Mage’s Guild circle, much to the appreciation of the defeated party.

Once all of the guild members had returned and were recovering, the Elemental Knight Zephyl returned and met with the mages to learn of their defeat.  He was not pleased at the news that they had only retrieved three of the six essences and warned the mages that they need to become more prepared for these tasks because the balance of the elements is resting on their success.

The Icenian stone elves Ren and Telokh informed those assembled that they were able to see through sections of the ice in the chamber while they were there and had recognized the surrounding landscape as being near to the Anarchy of Saribdis, the homeland of their people.

The Mage’s Guild is taking steps to prepare themselves for their next task as Elemental Wardens.

Vacarran Corsairs Claim to Hold Royal Knights

To add to Ashbury’s woes in Fairdale, a contingent of Vaccaran Corsairs arrived late one night in late May.  They were led by one calling himself First Mate Fetid McScurvy.  The foul creatures asked for parlay and the Ashbans decided to hear him out.  McScurvy claimed that his captain, Rotwave, had captured Sir Tyler Bannoch and Dame Beatrice Wyndham.  When asked about the queen, he shrugged and said he was not there to discuss that.  He offered to return the knights for 100 gold each.  The Ashbans, refusing to bargain with undead, refused.  A brief skirmish ensued and most of the undead were slain, with McScurvy fleeing into the darkness.

Whether the good knights of Icenia are truly hostages of the Vacarran and the fate of the Queen remain unknown.

Biata in Fairdale Receive Propehcy Dream

A number of biata in the area of Fairdale experienced racial “prophecy dreams” recently, falling where they stood and entering a deep trance-like state. It is yet unclear as to whether the dream tells of something that has already happened or of something that will happen in the future.

Although they would not share the details of this dream, it appears to be related to an item important to biata which is located in the Contested Lands.  This was evidenced by the number of biata adventurers, including Guildmistress Zatarina, Gwendara, and others, who ventured across the creek from Fairdale into the lands, seeking it.

Apparently they are not the only ones in search of the item, as adventurers have encountered members of the Dominion saying things as “We will not let you have it” while attacking.  Further, Ambassador Olpheus Borik of Thessi was also overheard to state that since the item was in the Contested Lands, Ashbury could not lay claim to it.

Ancient Labyrinth Discovered Under the Black Stag

Tavern worker Stoney Deepjug was recently seen limping out of the Black Stag wine cellar with tavern owner Skirfir. He carried with him a very large map and some scrolls. Customers within the tavern say they heard a loud crash below the building, but dismissed it as construction. When asked what happened, Stoney had this to say:

“I was in the wine cellar counting the stock and seeing what we needed to reorder. When I moved a very heavy shipment of dwarven ale from the rear of the building, the floor gave way beneath me. I landed and was knocked unconscious. When I awoke, my head and leg were in pain, but I was able to walk. I found a glowing orb on a pedestal, a book, and some notes. After skimming the book and notes, I was able to discover a walled area that turned into a portal when the orb was touched. Upon entering the portal, I found myself within a musty, walled chamber with no other means of exit, except the way that I came. The large room seemed to be an ancient Dwarven library of sorts, but time had beaten me to the contents, as many of the books were dust. What I found most interesting is that the map I found in the previous room seemed to be glowing, indicating the room that I was currently in. After looking around the rubble and finding nothing, I decided to return and read the book more thoroughly, so I may fully comprehend what it was that I found. I yelled out for Skirfir. He eventually heard me and threw me a rope. If this map is as large as I think it is, I might need adventuring teams to help me explore more of these odd rooms.”

Stoney has agreed to a further interview once he has had a chance to read the ancient text.

Magistrate’s Report

I recently held the trial for the biata Veil Keekoree.  Baron Ivan and I had all of the squires present to observe, ask questions, and make comments, so that we could better evaluate them as Paladins.

I now regret that I agreed to allow the trial to be private, as this has allowed the convicted necromancer to make false claims about the trial.

The evidence showed that Veil had apparently fallen for a handsome vampire some time ago while in the Vansir Reclaim.  She had hoped to meet with this man again, apparently had tried to contact him, and when the vampires arrived in Fairdale recently, went out looking for him. In fact, she was overheard asking for him specifically upon coming across some undead who apparently had made arrangements to meet with her.  Unknown to her, she had been followed, and her actions caused this witness’ death at the hands of the undead.

She claimed in her defense that she had entered the woods in attempting to commit suicide.  This was believed by none, as she had gone into the woods in her armor, and prepared with all her defenses, including a rope in which to construct a Circle of Power (which she did).

She was found guilty of Consorting with Undead and sentenced to one death, and she should consider herself lucky, as had she been convicted of necromancy the penalty for a second offense is obliteration.  She refused to resurrect in Fairdale and has since shown no indication of remorse.  In fact, she continues to proclaim that she was misunderstood and treated unfairly.

I want it made clear here:  I do not tolerate necromancers or those who consort with necromancers and thus allow it to continue. We must always remember as well that the law must treat everyone the same, and those who travel and adventure alongside of us should be held to the same standard (if not a higher one) than our enemies who perform similar deeds.

Veil has, of course, paid her debt to society, and I will prosecute any criminal actions taken against her.

I must also point out, as it has been asked of me, about a writ demanding her return to the lands known previously as Syraandor where apparently she is wanted.  We have no treaty with these lands and as such the writ has no legal bearing.  Any bounty hunters attempting to kidnap Veil will be dealt with under our laws as necessary.  It is hopeful, although not expected, that Veil would instead turn herself in to the authorities there.

Sir Eros Clearbrook, Magistrate

The Corner of Chivalry

By Baron Ivan Drake

It is well known that Ashbury is threatened by a number of dangerous enemies at this time in our history.  As a result, adventurers, soldiers, and even innocent farmers and tradesmen are caught in the midst of this violence.  Our own queen is not immune to the conflicts.  Some, like the stout dwarf Ragnar, pay the ultimate price; their spirits too weak to return to continue the fight.  Others, like Squire Ulthoc and Seneshal Gwendara, manage to return from the dead to serve Ashbury again.  Countless others fall on the battlefield only to be risen by our dedicated healers.  Despite sometimes having cultural differences, meaningless arguments and petty disagreements among us, the citizens of Ashbury continue to “fight evil without cessation” and refuse to “recoil before thine enemy.”  And I am proud of us for that.

The Code of Chivalry helps us make decisions when faced with tough choices.  It guides our hearts as we struggle against adversity.  It serves as a moral compass as we make our way through the pathways of life.  And it is held aloft as the ideal standard of behavior.  Let us apply the principles of the Code not only to how we handle ourselves against our enemies, but also how we treat our fellow citizens.

Healer’s Guild Report

I would sincerely like to thank all of those citizens who came together to fight against the vampires, through battle skills and research skills.  We rose to the occasion with such grace that more than just the task at hand was accomplished.  We are all in debt to those scholars who brought their books and research papers to share information to help us defeat our enemies. Baronies and Guilds worked together without personal glory in mind, and that makes me very proud.

For those who are interested in being a part of the Healer’s Guild in Fairdale, please see me for the initial screening on each Friday when the Duke has called for a gathering.  Full interviews are held after the Squire’s Breakfast on Saturday, when the entire Guild membership is present.

This upcoming gathering, I hope to have a party inside the Guild that night, with some special new treats to share.  Baron Ivan, you are always welcome and always entertaining.

The Guild is looking for a Ritual of Woe scroll (or two) so we can make sure as many people as possible are able to assist the next time vampires arrive.  We also are buying components, especially wands, nightshade, and jetsam, so that we can at least temporarily invest members, which will free many Life spells to be available on the battlefield instead of being tied up in the Guild.

All those who have helped us in the past and who continue to do so through your generous contributions and acknowledgments of the services of our healers, we thank you.

Zatarina Norik

Mage’s Guild Report

I am very proud of the work my Guild members have been doing, and hope that all have been suitably impressed by them.  As we can see, the contributions made by celestial casters can make a difference!

If you are interested in joining the Guild and receiving its benefits (which include discounted rates for spell ink, buying scrolls and components, getting identifications and the like), please contact me.

I want everyone to understand as well that the Guild is indeed a hierarchy, where there is a Guildmaster, Assistants, Apprentices, Initiatives and the like.  You are expected to follow the orders of those above you (be they not contrary to the laws of the land or a previous order by a noble, of course).  And if you do disagree, you are expected to do so in private.

The Guild has ritual scrolls that may be studied (for a fee) when spellcrafting, battle magic and ritual scrolls for sale, and components.  We will do celestial rituals for you if requested.

At the moment, we have a great need for certain components and will purchase (or trade) for ones we need.  Please contact us!

Sage’s Guild Report

The Sage’s Guild of Icenia is pleased to announce the acceptance of new apprentices into our guild: Lord Aaeun Nimbus, Squire Ulthoc of Nordenn and Amaranthas Landcharmer. I hope that they find their new roles in the Sage’s Guild enjoyable and are able to aid the adventurer’s with their skills.

As stated in last month’s Ashbury Times, we are in the process of opening a chapter in Fairdale. For right now, there is no room for the Sage’s Guild library to be, we hope in the coming years to slowly bring up our books, but we are still available to any and all who wish to ask for our services.  Please find either myself or any member of the Sage’s Guild to assist you. We will be starting guild hours in the coming months to make it easier to request our services.

Letters

This past gathering, the adventurers faced one of the biggest crisis to face Icenia since Black Annis and Galantri with the Rhiatan Stones:  Lochaber the Suave and Princes Pig Face, the wife of Gabriel.  They had the upper hand ... in the middle of town they had a magical obelisk that allowed undead to walk around mocking the daylight, and not only that but made all manner of undead intelligent. To say this was a challenge would be an understatement. As soon as adventurers arrived undead attacked with no mercy or regard for which they went after. Many townsfolk laid dead as the adventuring healers were attempting to keep up with the demand for life spells and healing.

This was not war. There are rules in war. This was a battle for the survival of our lives, and for survival of the earth.  The foul taint of necromantic magic wafted in the air. Just breathing in the air gagged some as if poisoned.  The necromantic magics were so powerful an area around the cursed obelisk would not allow anyone who is living to enter.

Some of those who gathered were infected by the vampires who lurked and used the obelisk to gain power.  Some conspired with the undead, revealing what little strategy the nobles could come up with. And in the middle of this treachery, heroes rose up to face the challenge to protect the land.  The courage displayed by those who assisted in Fairdale was unparalleled. Many were unable to affect the menace yet they faced it with conviction and strength of character. Those who could shared their personal resources, so that everyone could do something to help in the battles.

The traveling adventures pooled additional resources, including one generous Elven Ranger with noble demeanor who was seen speaking to Baron Rorri and Lady Knight Gloriana, to complete an ancient ritual creating the Penumbra Blade. The sacrifice of Aslyn needs to be mentioned, as her blood was required to activate the blade that will eventually kill Princes Pig face.  (That is her name now as she was Gypsy Cursed masterfully by the Lady Knight of Nordenn.)

We also had some demoralizing losses. Long time champion of the weak and defender of the common man, Ragnar Foxfire, died permanently. He had died several times before (such as at the hands-tentacles thingies of the Crix), but he always managed to come back. His spirit was strong and the only way he could have died permanently was through Obliteration, which is how he died in battle against the vampire pig Princess.  Gwendara, a brave biata soldier, also felt the spirit searing force from the Dagger of Morganna wielded by the Undead Swine Royal. Gwendara fought bravely against the necromantic might of the undead but she too fell. She did return and as I understand plans to shove her bestial teo handed blade thru Princess Pig Face like a spit through a pig.  I long to see that day…. as a matter of fact I will probably be there to make sure the Undead Swine Royalty screams as it happens.

Princess Pig face, Swine of the Undead, remember these words and remember them well. We are coming. You won’t see us coming until it’s too late… the last thing you will see are the penumbra blade through your chest, a two handed sword through your head and eldritch fire to anoint you as you are sent to the void from which all evil necromantic chaotic beings go to for all the taint they have spread. You will fear the living as you should have, and your delusions of grandeur will be your ultimate weakness.

Lochaber the Suave your free pass is over, you are next. Can you not hear the call? Your time is at an end. The bells toll for thee.

Fight evil without cessation!

Symerille Strongbow a/k/a “Foxfire”

Having had the honor and pleasure of adventuring with my fellow protectors of Icenia for the better part of two years now, I feel that it is due time for me to speak both my mind, but also my observations and admirations of those who tirelessly lift their swords and summon their spells against the forces of darkness time and time again. No matter what colors one wears or which banner one bears,  there are among us living symbols of unwavering bravery and bottomless resolve to whom we can all measure ourselves and our actions, and surely should in such a time of growth and need for our fledgling town of Fairdale.
I speak not of adherence to any specific code, law, or doctrine, but rather of the intrinsic will we all have within ourselves to pursue a goal, a quest, or any other driving force that beyond all else we would see brought to conclusion. This may be the obtaining of a rank, the felling of a foe, the mastering of an art, the rearing of a child, the building of a home, or one of so many other tasks to which someone could devote not just their energy, but perhaps their very own soul.
A wise person once told me that anything truly worth doing will be difficult to achieve. Beyond the acquisition of the basic necessities of life, we find ourselves constantly placed against so many obstacles, enemies, and conflicts through which we cannot immediately see an end. If we could, what challenge would there be in life? Without challenge there is no striving, and without striving, we are left docile and complacent with a mediocre existence. I believe it is the mark of a true hero to welcome his or her own conflicts, and embrace them as a natural part of their existence and actualization of potential.

I have been witness to too many examples of courage and noble persistence to name them all upon this parchment, but as each day passes among the company of such inspirational people, I find myself strengthening my own determination in pursuing a calling to which I feel most qualified, that of a member of the ranks of the Ducal Rangers.
I would be hypocritical if I urged the defenders of Fairdale to strengthen their own perseverance but yet did nothing to further my own goals. To make an example of myself, I wish to publicly announce my intent to join the ranks of the Ducal Rangers, and welcome any tasks or challenges which may lie between me and the acquisition of such an honor. While I have already voiced my goal to both Duke Frost himself, as well as a number of those who already serve him, I feel it necessary to expose my intentions to his people at large, to demonstrate and offer my services as a ranger and tracker to them, and to further solidify the nature of that which I wish to achieve.
I place into your hands, citizens and protectors of Fairdale, a decisive influence upon my claiming of such a position. It is upon my shoulders to complete such tasks as you would ask of a ranger, and in behaving so I mean to openly prove my worth to those who hold the power to officially make me a member of their Ducal ranks. With enough perseverance on my part, it is my hope that my actions will speak loudly enough to gain even more of their attention, and their favor. Until we stand against our common foes together once more…..

With all the animosity among us, from the constant bickering to the ramblings and slandering of one of our beloved knights, amongst all the finger pointing, mis-leading inaccurate stories going around, I look beyond all this and bring something positive.

I say congratulations Icenians and friends of Icenia. Victory to us all. Victory in the destruction of the obominations, the mindless, wretched vampires. I salute you all, those that stood and those that suffered.

Congratulations to Sgt. Ignatious and the Vex Squad, for their unrelentless attacks; to Ezri, Aislynn, and Aria for their preparation and constant studying (everytime I walked into the tavern you three were knee deep in old books); to Nordenn for their sacrifices of blood and materialistic things to help craft the weapon; and to Squire Aven, Goodman Garathon and the rest of the court of Blythedale for their constant support and attacks on the enemies to our lands.

Glory to you all. Glory to the Stormblades, glory to my dearest of friends of the Ash Forest. Glory to every single person who stood against that which is evil and banded together to stop the Wretched, and to stop the Armies of Arianne from gaining a lot of reinforcements.

So many people not affiliated with a court or a big traveling group, your efforts shall not go unnoticed today. I salute all of you and offer praise to every one of you. It is your victory also, if you were there then Glory and Honor to you.

I by no means wish to take away from the hard times we are facing now, or faced lately. The missing of our Queen, the death of Sir Ragnar; I do not wish to mislead that our fight is over. We still have the Dominion, the troll empire, werewolves, and a few new enemies that have yet to reveal themselves fully.

However, this past gathering we had victory, regardless how small or large some may think it to be... I feel something needed to be said.

Huzzah Icenia,

Lt. Ithica

 Brothers and sisters in arms,

I come to you now to address something that has come up several times since my resurrection. It is true, I was struck by the Dagger of Morganna. It tasted my blood, and shattered my spirit with a power more incredible than anything I have ever felt. I want you all to know that I made that choice, to stand there, to defend and to fight a terrible evil. She equally made the choice to strike me down. Please do not fault yourselves in my sacrifice. Do not feel guilt over this or sorrow that you should or could have done more to prevent it. I would stand there and face another obliteration without remorse or hesitation. I am at peace with my choice and my actions and I find none of your actions lacking or anything short of heroic. It was my time to fall, and to rise again. Nothing you could have done would have changed that outcome, only the circumstances around it. I could not have asked for a better time or better company to fight and fall beside.

Squire Koshi, I am told you were dominated at the time and were standing beside Arienne as she cut me down. I cannot imagine how frustrating this must be for you, but please find peace in knowing that I was proud to stand beside you that night. You are an incredible warrior and I will gladly stand beside you again.

Professor Ezri, I have never had a more skilled or competent healer at my back. You were everywhere I went. Together we filled the hole left when one of the shieldmen dropped. We held that spot, that crucial center space between the flanks for far longer than we had any right to. For a greatsword to hold a spot on the front line, and not just any spot but the center is no small feat. In truth, it took Arienne herself to break us and that speaks volumes for your bravery and skill. I would be honored to fight beside you, any day against any foe.

Again I thank all who stood and fought beside me that night. My loss and my sacrifice should not diminish your memory of this fight with sadness or guilt. Neither should Ragnar’s sacrifice. He gave everything while fighting this terrible evil. He would not want us to remember this fight and grieve. Instead I ask of you to remember our sacrifices and allow them to temper your resolve against evil. Let them make in each of us a strength of spirit that no dagger or amount of evil can ever take away.

I salute all of you for your bravery.

Honor and duty,

Gwendara Alanik, Seneschal of the Stormblades

To all who heard my call and offered aid; I thank you.

To those whom the mists kept from our place, but offered their best hopes, possessions, and help from the Earth; I thank you.

Dikembe: I suddenly and fully now understand your bond to the Earth like never before. Everything moves in a circled cycle, aiding the Earth in continued survival. Every stone, plant, creature...they all move as one.

A spark of sunlight has shown through the darkness; my hope is that it is the crack to destroy the clouds, and fully have the sun return.

To all who attended the gathering in Fairdale, I am putting out a notice and warning about the crime committed against my uncle Ragnar and myself.

When my uncle died, giving his life for the people of Icenia, his body was looted by some vicious coward. Ragnar died a hero and did not deserve to be picked over by whichever good-for-nothing carrion took his belongings.

I am setting a timetable on the return of those personal affects. You have till the next gathering to return everything. In that period, I give my oath that no charges shall be filed. After that time, if you are found with Ragnar’s items charges will be pressed. You may turn in the items anonymously to the town guard or magistrate if you do not want to give them to me or my crewmates personally.

I am hoping that the people of Fairdale will also assist me and my crewmates to find those items by being watchful and take notice of individuals with those stolen items. I am not asking this for myself but for the memory of my uncle, and a hero of Fortannis.

In particular, one of the items taken was to go to Lady Azura, upon Ragnar’s final death. This was his final wish and it can no longer be carried out. The item was a bracelet, it was a string of small silver skulls.

Sincerely,

Khaadijah, niece of Lord Knight Commander Ragnar

Parduc Negrie, Admiral of the Nordenn Baronial Navy

A Little Birdie Told Me

by Sue D’Onym

Hello, drearies.  Here is the latest News They Don’t Want You To Know!

When the Vacarran pirate Fetid McScurvy mentioned the names Tyler Bannoch and Beatrice Wyndham during a recent standoff, the ever informed Baron Ivan Drake answered with “Who?” and “Never heard of ‘em.”  Shouldn’t a baron of Icenia know the names of the royal knights?  Maybe we should send the kobolds to negotiate next time.

The Ducal Ball is coming up;  do you have a date yet?  The aforementioned Baron Ivan did have one, but with the conviction of Veil KeeKoree he is apparently free again.  He was hoping she would “repent” but no such luck.  My sources tell me that the kingdom from across the mists has sent some sort of “Writ” concerning Veil and her removal of some skull mark.  Veil somehow convinced Guildmistress Zatarina to remove it.  Hopefully that Kingdom doesn’t find out Zat was involved or she may be the subject of the next “Writ” to be sent through the mists.

People are whispering that Dame Glorianna can’t contain her attitude or judgments towards anyone. “She runs her mouth chastizing and speaking down to whoever she wishes, then runs behind her title for apologies and expects everyone to forgive her!” complained one adventurer who wrote to me. She is asking for the paladins to
judge her on her role with supposedly consorting with the vampire Lochaber a few months back. “Perhaps they should judge her on her every day attitude as well,” my source said.  Glorianna won’t care much about that, though, as she is lost in grand thoughts about her upcoming wedding to Squire Trevor!

However, back to Lochaber.  The Big Meanie has inspired great hatred among the Ashbans.  He’s a foul undead, he’s killed hundreds if not thousands of Ashbans, and he leads the armies of an enemy nation.  But nothing has engendered as much pure anger and hatred as when he led the adventurers on a chase through a swamp while in gaseous form.  While the vampire drifted quietly over the swamp, the Ashbans cursed and yelled as they sunk deeper and deeper.  I hear Flint the dwarf even lost his shoe into the sucking morass.

Darkan of the Stormblades is a nice enough fellow but he can’t seem to keep track of who is a member, who is in charge, or pretty much what’s going on.

Squire Koshi meanwhile has secretly vowed to give up the quest for knighthood if he is not made one by this fall.

After months of openly proclaiming his distaste of “Barbarians,” Wizard Aloysius was seen meeting with Squire Ulthoc of Nordenn for some time, presumably about their “differences.”  Perhaps keeping tabs on the Mage’s Guild, the Vansir Squire was also seen walking into the nearby woods alone with one Nathan Westwind, outspoken guild recruiter, for a long chat later that same weekend.  Perhaps the Squire is practicing at keeping his friends close and… well you know the saying.  Maybe Nathan was just warning Ulthoc to stay away from the Wizard when he is doing one of his experiments, as the last one blew up in their faces and caused quite a colorful display of flames and explosions.

That’s all for this month…So until next time, remember – If you can’t say something nice about someone, come sit by me.

SCHOOL FOR ADVENTURERS!  Please direct less experienced adventurers to Sparktet Bone Littlebeard at the next gathering of Ashban adventurers. I am trying to coordinate practical and theoretical training as lessons learned outside a controlled environment tend to be very harsh.  I am seeking more experienced adventurers to teach any or all of the following classes on a volunteer basis:  Adventurers & the law in Ashbury: Recent Trials & Verdicts;  Recent history of Ashbury;  Current politics of Ashbury: Allies & Enemies; Nobles and Well-Known Citizens of Ashbury;  Monsters of Ashbury: where to Find Them & How to Defeat Them; Combat practicum: teamwork in battle.  These classes will be free for novice adventurers. Those with silver to spare will be asked to contribute two silver or two Cure Light Wounds potions when attending the class. This contribution is encouraged because it will help ensure that adventurers new to our duchy have some essential supplies.
