Duke Aramis and Princess Lilyth to be Married in May!

With the death of King Thrombolis of Icenia, the very man who arranged for the marriage of his daughter to the Duke of Ashbury, His Grace decided to personally ask Princess Lilyth to be his bride.

Duke Aramis was once again uncharacteristically nervous about the whole affair and immediately called a council of his nobles and their knights and squires. Princess Lilyth, who normally sits in on the Duke’s meetings with the nobles to learn the ways of Ashbury statehood, was not in attendance.

However, when the Princess learned that a council of the nobles had been called, she came to His Grace to find out what the council was about. Princess Lilyth found the Duke in the tavern and she entered with an entourage consisting of her court jester, Gluff, her personal guards and a very curious band comprised of most of adventurers who had journeyed to the estate of Zalinarik’s Keep.

A variety of distractions kept pulling Lilyth’s attention away from the visibly nervous Duke Aramis as he fought to find the words of his heart. All the while Baron Jonathan and Sir Daniel urged His Grace on while Strozzi and Vladimir, two traveling gypsies, attempted to assist the Duke with “colorful truths and compliments.” At the last interruption of his carefully composed thoughts by the Icenian jester, Gluff, His Grace shot the poor fellow a dark look that would have most men trembling. Needless to say, Gluff fell silent.

Then the confident aura that the Ashbans have come to know so well returned to His Grace and he proceeded to speak of his love for the Princess and ask for her hand.

It was reported that His Grace ended his proposal by saying, “Lady, I have been decorated by generals and even saved a king’s life...I have been knighted and then proclaimed a Duke, I have faced and defeated many evils...but all these glories, all these honors would all pale before the honor of one word from you to me: ‘Yes.’”

And then a hush fell in the tavern and all eyes fixed on Princess Lilyth, all ears awaited her answer.

The Princess smiled and said, “Yes.”

The two plan on being married this May, and a celebration will follow.

New Threat to the Forest Revealed

An Open Letter to the Amani Council and the People of Ashbury

Esteemed Council members and citizens of Ashbury:

I write to you with a recollection of what has been reported to us from fellow rangers as to mysteries revealed involving a dark force within the Ash Forest. The Forest Lord has revealed himself once again, but it has been discovered the bond he possesses with the Spirit Tree and the Forest itself is shared by a dark entity only known as Sartoura.

This dark lady seemingly lays sleep and dormant, while her dreams reach out and possess creatures and beings of the Forest to enact her role within the Forest. She is the source of destruction and predation based upon accountings by members of the Chosen. If indeed she is the “Dark Lady” of the Forest then she is an entity dedicated to a pattern called the “Dark Cycle.”

Sartoura is believed to have once been the mate of the Forest Lord, an elf that long ago bonded with the Spirit Tree. The Tree may be the key to controlling the land bond of the Forest. Dark areas we have long guarded from destruction may in fact be battle grounds between the forces of birth and destruction within the Forest. Such battles seem to predate even the Kiergani arrival within the forest thousands of years ago.

Arriving on Friday evening, March 12, we were extremely worried about non-elven adventurers and the havoc they caused. Ranger of the Order of the Wolf Drakonios kept a careful watch on these adventurers, and Baron Agnar kept them in check. Invited by the Forest Lord and Zalinarik, adventurers appeared at a time of great luck. Privateers from the Bay of Vacara attacked the estates of South Point and Zalinarik’s Keep from a Corsair dreadnought off the coast. Rumors have it these sailors and privateers are undead and necromantic, but only human pirates were encountered. Concern grows in the coastal communities but so far this seems to have been an isolated raid for crew members and booty.

With the help of the adventurers, this attempt, by one Captain Nil of the Tidal Reaper and his crew, was repulsed with little damage.

Following the attack of these pirates, the Chosen Ledyard Whitetree arrived to reveal that strange happenings were being noted all around the Forest. Predatorial creatures across the estate of Zalinarik’s Keep were gathering together in great numbers and isolated attacks were occurring in the area of the Tree of Swords. (Editor’s Note: See the March ‘96 Ashbury Times for more information on the Tree of Swords)

Strangely enough, creatures which are typically solitary such as bears and serpents were demonstrating pack mentalities with creatures such as myst lynx, dire wolves, and spiders. Seemingly possessed of some dark will of their own, they attacked in small packs of their own types, and even occasionally mingled with each other to feast upon the fallen.

Ledyard Whitetree explained that these creatures were possessed of some dark force and must not be killed by the Order of the Forest Lord. Under Baron Agnar’s specific orders, the assembled adventurers managed to save many of the animals even though they attacked them with ferocity and rabid resolve.

Those creatures that were healed or who recovered from unconsciousness seemingly woke from a dream and fled into the forest.

The Chosen Ledyard told all that the shield of the Forest Lord, carried by Baron Agnar as the symbol of the landbond of the Ash Forest, would enable the Baron to send groups into the Forest to attempt to remove the dark sites of the Dark Lady’s power and cleanse them. Ledyard once again reminded the adventurers that they were guests within the Forest and of the Forest Lord, and that crimes against the Forest were punished without hesitation and harshly – and with this in mind, the adventurers would led to the Tree of Swords.

At the Tree of Swords, all was quiet. The majestic boughs of this youthful tree revealed jagged thorns of nearly three feet in length. The Forest Lord stepped from the Tree itself to greet and explain the need to combat the creatures possessed by the evil force. He said that a dark force came to the Tree to take it and the adventurers must turn and guard the Tree.

Almost immediately stepping from the tree after the Forest Lord was a spirit form of a elven woman. The Forest Lord greeted her with love and kindness and called her Sartoura. Cautiously, he asked how she had awoken from her sleep and she explained that she had come to rejoin him. They were to be reunited and rule the Forest as one.

Taken aback, the Forest Lord questioned her and was mystified to find her soon calling him weak and fool. Her tone became more drawn and vile as the Forest Lord told her she would never be allowed to rule again. She claimed that the war would once again ignite across the Forest and she summoned her Chosen from the Tree.

Movement immediately began all around the Forest as five elven forms came from the Tree of Swords. Screaming their names, they called their forces. They attacked the adventurers for over an hour in the bitter winds, with all of the predators of the Forest coming to their commands. The Chosen were struck down many times only to once again walk from the Tree to serve their mistress.

Finally, with a foul laugh, Sartoura entered the Tree of Swords, and the Forest Lord screamed that the war would begin and pursued her into the Tree itself.

Sartoura’s Dedicants were scattered to the wind and did not return until later in the evening. Leading packs of their chosen animals one by one, they led attacks against the town through the day and night as Baron Agnar prepared to strike at the dark areas of the Ash Forest.

The following morning, a parade of strange persons appeared to speak with the Court and citizens of the Ash Forest. A group of FOIL members spoke and nearly incited a riot. After their rapacious speech ended, the Baron dismissed them, but seemed just as close to ordering their execution.

Wild elves appeared later during the day looking to barter, and from what we can discern they were members of the Ferret tribe. This particular group is known throughout the area as con men. They give the Kiergani a terrible name, as they play up their “primitive” ways and trade rocks and such useless trinkets for items of real worth.

As if the morning could not have been worse, members of Entholm’s human contingent attempted to once again gain independence. They were surprisingly moderate for most Entholm humans, and have been singing in the ear of Lady Azrael. We will inform the Lady if they perpetrate any crimes of note, for we fear they may try to manipulate her in some way to gain her support.

A small incident occurred which could have been trouble when a ranger cache was taken unknowingly by a member of Baron Agnar’s court, but it was returned promptly once it was identified.

Later that night, Ledyard Whitetree led the entire force that was gathered at Zalinarik’s Keep against the Black Oak Grove and fought dozens of strange bipedal plant creatures. The Forest animated these to attack the forces of Ashbury as they rushed to attach a trap to the base of the ominous tower that lies in the center of the Grove. The tower itself has never been reached by the rangers before, and apparently possessed some massive beast of vines and claws within the tower itself.

The Sarr Tithraq, with a specially assigned squad of adventurers, rushed up a steep hill to the grove and successfully armed the trap while being attacked by plant creatures. While all managed to get out of the blast area, the tower collapsed crushing Tithraq, Lady Azrael, and Gage. Fortunately, they were able to be healed after being dug out of the rubble. The collapsing tower killed the creature within, and the Black Oak Grove was liberated.

While it is nearly impossible for us to explain all the things that may have occurred within Zalinarik’s Keep, in addition to Linduria, two dark areas of the Forest were examined. The White Pillars are believed to have revealed some mystery to Baron Agnar and he and members of his court managed to cleanse the area. Meanwhile, eighteen individuals attempted to enter the Shadow Wood and were attacked by powerful shades. In the darkness of the area they became disorientated, and separated within the Forest. Strange spirits within the forest dragged sleeping victims away while screams of angry spirits howled in the darkness. While the group apparently located several strange areas of dead ground, the solution to this puzzle of the damned was not revealed. No lives were lost, but the supposed horror of the place will live in the minds of all who entered.

The battle with this entity Sartoura may just be beginning. I request you please make every effort to discuss preparations for what may become a deadly battle for the control of our forest.

Astinelk Blackarrow, Commander of the Order of the Wolf, Amani Rangers

Last Icenian King Dead

In early March, King Thrombolis Avacar of Icenia and father of Princess Lilyth, His Grace’s betrothed, died of a strange disease that had plagued Icenia for centuries before the kingdom’s collapse 300 years ago.

The “Monarch Malady” is a strange sickness for it only struck members of the Icenian Royal Family and only some of the time. No cure had ever been found.

“He must have contracted Malady around the time Galantri cursed our kingdom,” said the grieving Princess Lilyth, dressed in somber black, “and his stay in the Enchanted Mists must have arrested the advancement of the disease.”

Centuries ago, as the circle of cursed energy of Galantri of Galanthia closed in, the Royal Court and several hundred others consisting of Royal Mages Guild members, Generals, servants and soldiers escaped into the Enchanted Mists, hoping to one day restore their kingdom.

“When we left the Mists and lived among the people of Ashbury,” said the Princess, “the Monarch Malady must have started advancing again.”

Sir Jaret Named Emmisary

His Grace has sent the paladin, Sir Jaret Delair, to the eastern realms of Moorgrave and Glenrake in hopes that the goodly knight may help those troubled lands redeem themselves.

The nobility of Glenrake and Moorgrave have fallen from grace and have adopted the foul practice of transforming themselves into undead forms, claiming it to be a sort of “armor” in their war against each other. While understanding the spirit of their intentions, His Grace is nonetheless appalled by thier actions and would see if they can be turned away from their dark path. Therefore, it is Duke Aramis’ hope that Sir Jaret, the purest knight since Sir Ivan Drake and a fearless hero, can lead them back onto the path of righteousness. The people of Ashbury wish the paladin much luck in his endeavor. He shall be missed.

Spider Web Destroyed; Queen still Remains

A group of adventurers including Calis, Derek, Gage, Tithirak, and Rasq went into the Forest seeking the attorcob Queen KonKornala. She has been the one responsible for all the chaos between True animals and Unpure animals war. What else is known of her still remains a mystery. After a long journey they came upon a huge cave with webbing surrounding the area. Once inside there was an onslaught of spiders and attorcobs, and after a long combat the heroes continued on to the final antechamber to see that the queen had escaped. The cave was burned down as the adventurers returned to the home. No one one knows what has happen to the queen but she is believed to be hiding out somewhere in Trellheim.

Spirit Messengers?

Reports stream in from all across the duchy of sightings of incorporeal black entities who rise up out of the earth, terrifying innocents. The dark ghosts have been heard whispering chilling phrases like, “Soon it will crack” and “600. . .soon.”

And in other related events, ethereal spirits have also made random appearances around the duchy, delivering the same cryptic phrase: “Prepare the Defenders of Amora Fortannis, for soon the light shall wane. . .”

It is unknown what these spirits are or their purpose here.

All profits will go to charity, including a fund for the now homeless refugees from Requin’s regime.

Letters

Good People of Ashbury,

I have asked that representatives from the Amani Council of the Ash Forest, as well as from the Biata, Vansir and Dwarven Freeholds meet with me at an April Gathering to renew the old treaties. These treaties were originally made with our former kingdom, which does not exist in this new world and there does not seem to be a means for returning to our former world.

The brightest mages and scholars have toiled this year past in a grand effort to find away back to no avail. The Lady of the Mist, our first ally in this new world, has said that the enchanted roads back to our former world are sealed closed. Knowing this, we must now look to the future. We must make new bonds and new alliances if we seek to survive the dark onslaught we find hurled against us. That is why I have also asked that delegates from the mountain kingdom of Cuulannis also join us to hopefully forge and alliance.

I ask that the brave adventurers of Ashbury join us for the Treaty Councils in April to help make sure all is safe and well. It will be a year since War began with the Deep Trolls and we know now that they have been, all along, in alliance with the Galanthians and Count Requin Drager. In this long year, we have been faced with impossible odds, colossal obstacles and the most dire of plots and still we prevail. Our homes remained ours and we bend knee to no foreign power. This is so because of the brave spirits that dwell within the heroes of Ashbury. Time and again, when there stood nothing between our defeat and our enemies’ ambitions save a small band of brave and worthy heroes. What inspiration it is to know that we live in a land that gives birth to such heroic hearts.

Yours in Truth, in Honor,

Duke Aramis Llyrr

Greetings to all,

I will be overseeing the Mages Guild in April and as customary, I fully expect all mages who still consider themselves a part of this guild to check in with me each Friday night for the purposes of guild duty. You better have one Detect Magic in memory for your shift as well. Members will be demoted for failure to do duty!

On another note, I have several missions to be performed. If you are a mage in this guild, then I have tasks for you which can lead to advancement within the guild. If you are not a mage in this guild but would like to be, feel free to stop by for an interview. If you have been given a task already, I expect a full write-up on my desk by Friday of the next gathering.

May the elements be kind to you,

Royal Guildmaster Tirflorn MacMannon

People of Ashbury,

It saddens me that after all this time and all that we have endured at the hands of the Elemental powers, that my companions and I were still met with hostility and ignorance recently. We were in the Ash Forest hunting down one of these despicable creatures and were met with anger by members of the court of Blythedale. Why? Because we sent a vile being back to where it belongs?

People of Ashbury, the Elementals do not care for us, no matter what we have been told. They simply use us to further their own ends. We are pawns to their games, but only if we let that happen! You are fooling yourself if you believe for a second that an Elemental, no matter what the type, belongs here. This is our plane and we must fight for it!

For the good Sir who suggested that I be more discerning of the type of Elemental I hunt, I suggest to you to be more careful as to the type of beings you would trust. A Life Elemental is just as dangerous as a Death Elemental because they don’t care to think twice about exploiting us for their interests. You, Good Sir are a tool in their minds and in the minds of any elemental. I urge you to cast off the shackles of Elemental oppression and join with us, not to fight against us. Join the fight to free our plane.

Damon Koni

Citizens of Ashbury:

Please read the May 597 Ashbury Times for insight into the true agenda of the man calling himself Justin, leader of the Order of the Rising Sun. Do not let ignorance of the past result in more death.

Squire Natasha Roskaya

My name is Grandmarshal Tallbrow Shadyfoot and I represent the Ducal Sanctioned Miscellaneous Guilds of Ashbury. At the next gathering (and hopefully more in the future), I will be hosting several contests in which I hope the citizens of Ashbury will take the time to forgo the troubles of war and join me in celebrating our success in this new world by friendly competing with one another in the areas of Baking, Clothing, Jewelry, Performing, Smithing (armor and weapons), Writing and Reciting Poetry, Art, and Trap challenging.

The Baking contest will require the baker to bring with him/her three similar items for tasting. More may be baked/cooked for sale to customers and onlookers.

The Clothing contest will require the clothier to supply one fully dressed model for judge perusal.

The Jewelry contest will require the participant to supply one item for perusal, not a collection of pieces! However, more pieces can be displayed for purchase from the public.

The Performing contest will require the participant(s) to perform one piece. It can be a soliloquy, a sonnet, an act, a full length play, a musical, a song, etc…Please check with me to make sure your idea is acceptable. Necromantic animators need not show!

The Smithing contest will require the participants to bring with them a single piece of either weaponry or a suit of armor to be put on display at the show. Again, more wares may be displayed for sale to public.

The Writing contest will require the poet to submit and read aloud to the judges their poem.

The Art contest will require the contestant to display a single piece of art for judge perusal. More may be sold to the public.

The Trap challenging contest will require the contestants to compete in designing a trapped room. Each team will go through another’s trapped room. They will be judged on the room they create, the efficiency of going through another’s room, as well as time spent or wasted in the room. Each team will consist of three people.

When will this all take place? The Baking, Clothing, Jewelry, Smithing, and Art will take place at Noon on Saturday, the 17th of the Dragon. The Performing and Writing contests will take place at 9 bells past noon. And the trap challenge will take place at various times in the evening hours. Ask me more about it when I arrive.

To help with costs and prizes, I will require each participant in each event (you can enter more than one contest if you are so skilled) to pay an entrance fee of 5 silver pieces. Fun and prizes await you!

Grandmarshal Tallbrow Shadyfoot

News From Around the Duchy

Blackbourne: The estate has fallen to Count Requin and his army. His forces comprise a mix of Deep Trolls, Galanthians and his own personal army brought with him from the Duchy of Niman.

Dockside: The HMS Raker returned from its voyage back in February, completing its mission assigned by Duke Aramis to perform a cursory exploration of the Bay of Vacara. Reports state that the ship encountered Galanthian shipping lines to the coast of Trellheim as well as a great dreadnought manned by undead belonging to the dreaded Vacaran Corsairs. A Ducal navy is currently under construction and ship builders are hopeful that the fleet will be ready by mid-600.

Greystone: The famous hobling highway robber Luvo Piper and his Quickhand Bandits escaped capture by bounty hunters seeking the 100 gold crowns offered by the Ashbury Merchants Conglomerate.

Linduria: A group of adventurers led by Squire Talin Gildenlily of the Ash Forest have destroyed a creature which was creating undead and marauding the village. The thick fog which has surrounded the area for years has not gone away, but it is considerably lighter. No undead have been sighted since the party cleared the area.

Zalinarik’s Keep: A FOIL meeting was disrupted recently when all of the members resurrected. Upon returning to their home, they discovered as well that they had been robbed. The Amani elves had obviously been victims of Amnesia elixirs. There are no suspects.

Astrological Forecast

by Solemn Judgment

This is the month of the Dragon in the year 599, Year of the Scales. Known among the commoners as the first month of Spring, the Dragon signals the advent of Air, a time of quickening and change as the grip of winter is broken. The Dragon is a creature of Fire at home in the Air, and emphasizes this theme of movement and change. Some would denote this as Chaos, whose time is approaching in the sixth month, but the peak elemental influence during the Dragon is that of Alliance. Surely, the Duke has chosen well for a time of treaties, as the year of the Scales signals judgment and decision, whereas the Dragon offers magical portents (dangerous, surely, but worthy of negotiation as opposed to open conflict, since the beast is too strong to openly overcome). The eminent stellar symbol during Dragon is the constellation of the Arbalest, who is a mercenary warrior effective through the Air with his weapon. Again, it is truly a fortunate time to pursue treaties, that we may have the most powerful allies now for trials sure to come. Everyone would be advised in like wise to look to standing arrangements, and perhaps change them - or watch them change without your volition.

A Little Birdie Told Me

by Sue D’Onym

So His Grace and the Princess are getting married! I do love a royal wedding! Sir Daniel is to be the Best Man, supposedly because Duke Aramis has been taking his advice about courting. I don’t know about you, but anyone who tells me to propose in a smelly tavern in front of a bunch of adventurers needs some lessons in romance. Princess Lilyth apparently wasn’t very taken with the method of the proposal, given how often she interrupted the Duke and made it clear that she was not happy with the situation (even if she obviously did want to marry him).

Congratulations also go to Squire Sparktet, who was married to Celest this past gathering. It seems that the Squire fell in love with the young lady shortly after learning that a good number of sheep lived on her farm. The Brookmating ceremony was performed by Baron Agnar. (The Good Baron was possessed with remarkable patience later that weekend when a group of FOIL elves came to town and started a rally. If looks could kill, those fellows would have been obliterated.)

Luigie was seen having a few choice words with Mithrako recently after the “elf” came into town to taunt a few citizens. Luigie, apparently forgetting what had happened to Rune, decided to do a little taunting of his own! Luigie just has a bad habit getting on the wrong people’s bad sides...but it appears that they have an understanding, seeing how Mithrako just left town with a smile in his face.

An obviously unbalanced prophet, accompanied by a stuffed llama soothsayer, was wandering through Zalinarik’s Keep recently, telling fortunes to anyone who wished to hear them. Upon examining Calis, he declared that the lumps on his head indicated that he would be betrayed by someone he considered a friend. Calis immediately pointed at Luigie and shouted, “You!” Lady Azrael was kind enough to prepare a resting spot for the llama, and was proclaimed by the prophet to be a great seer when she turned to Strozzi and Vladimir, two gypsies who were traveling though the area, and said, “I predict that you will make many people very angry and will resurrect many times until you permanently die.”

Speaking of gypsies named Vlad, the one who claims to be the Gypsy King was in Zalinarik’s Keep at the same time, asking all gypsies to unite under his banner. Of course, this is nothing new. It seems to be a Rite of Spring that the gypsies come out and declare themselves king.

Rasq and Inaque and some friends recently went a’sailing into the new sea to our south — and then a few days later, word came in that pirates had been attacking in the area! Neither has resurrected yet, and no word has come from them — are they still alive?

You know, this high stakes poker game has many people interested. Who exactly is behind this? Who is handling this “charity”? Inquiring minds want to know.

That’s all for this month, so until next time remember — If you can’t say something nice about someone, come sit by me.
