Adventurers of Ashbury Reappear!

by Oliver Nirab

On the sixth day of Fire Ant, a great surprise greeted the citizens of Ashbury.

Many of Ashbury’s adventurers who had vanished almost a year earlier suddenly reappeared. Early that day, Baroness Glenduria traveled to her manor house only to find it occupied by the adventuring group Glory Road.  Others arrived to find friends they had not seen  for quite some time, and after discussing matters, the mystery of the disappearance started to be solved.

His Grace Duke Frost entered town a short time later and, gathering all in the Dragon’s Flagon, asked for a report from the assembled adventurers. They had quite a story to tell.

Apparently, as reported in the Ashbury Times of a year ago, they had gone to the sight of a fallen meteor when a black mist spewed forth and enveloped them. They found themselves in the realm of Black Annis, the Queen of the Dark Fey. According to witnesses, Black Annis had the Prime Rhi Artan stone and she used it to summon the other stones to her. She then opened a portal back to the mortal realm and ordered her minions to attack. In a fighting retreat, the adventurers were able to get to the portal and return to the mortal realm, but found themselves ten years in the future.

The future they reported was a nightmarish realm where justice was a long forgotten concept. Glantri was the emperor of both Galanthia and Icenia, but he was little more than a pawn of Black Annis. All of the books that taught history were burned, and a group run by Glantri called the Order of the Mark executed anyone who dared even disagree with the Empire. In this horrible future, sarr were outlawed while gnolls were considered citizens.

According to the returned adventures, the Barony of the Ash Forest had left the empire after Emperor Glantri imprisoned King Gareth and Queen Sidraste. Baron Morgasander led the rebellion from the Ash Forest along with the Amani Council.

Things came rapidly to a head in the days just before the adventurers returned from the future. In an attack against the Ash Forest, the Empire was apparently able to capture Amani Council members Glenduria Goodberry, Gwindor Grayhalme, and M’theran Kilentria. Using the Rhi Artan stones, Emperor Glantri cursed them to obliteration, killing Gwindor permanently.

Not long afterwards, a man was brought forth and executed by Grofcus, a member of the Order of the Mark, for stealing a loaf of bread and a necklace. Since the Order of the Mark only had jurisdiction over the charge of Treason, Sir Eros executed Grofcus for murder. In response, the Order executed Sir Eros, and Glantri renounced the Code of Chivalry as a useless concept that only allowed criminals to hide.

After Sir Eros dissipated to resurrect, the Order of the Mark started rounding up random citizens to execute them for treason. As the executions were taking place, Morgasander led Rasq Darkmoon, Tithraq Nafud, members of the Black Forest Mercenary Company, and the adventuring group known as the Jade Thorns in an attack against the town. The rest of the adventurers happily aided them.

In a fairly quick fight, the rebels took Ashbury City. Morgasander informed those present that other attacks were being led against the empire. The Biata Councils led assaults in Hopewell and Bloodstone, and Brendan’s army had secured areas of Nordenn. Mishrak and his lizard men attacked from The Fens, the Amani Rangers were taking back Waterwood, King Kelenor led the dwarves to attack out of Trollsgate, and help even came from most unexpected sources. For instance, when Glenduria awoke to lead her armies out of the Ash Forest she was met with two hundred gingerbread man golems sent by the fey known as the Candyman, apparently at the behest of Perwin the Baker.

Many attempts were made by the Empire to take back Ashbury City, from troops of Swords of Lore, to a small army of gnolls. The most despicable of the Imperial “attacks” was to put weapons in the hands of children and send them to attack the rebel troops. Thankfully, the Ashbury heroes only took the weapons away from the children and told them to go home and stay there.

Soon enough, Queen Sidraste, Baron Morgasander, Baroness Glenduria, Sir Eros, and Sassafur the jester along with Galanthian Warlord Loren Tor, who had been informed of the true nature of Emperor Glantri and sided with the Ashbans against him, arrived in town. They informed the rebels that in order to remove Glantri’s land bond, Queen Sidraste would need to get to the fairy mound near Ashbury and thrust her magical blade Validius into it.

There were less than a hundred Ashban adventurers marching towards the mound when they were met by Emperor Glantri and Duke Frost leading a force of ten thousand troops.

Using the power of the Land Bond, Queen Sidraste caused the land itself to rise up and crush the Galanthian troops. A cheer went up from the adventurers who now only faced two foes.  However, before the attack could commence, Glantri used his Land Bond powers to immobilize the Ashbans, and all were held with the exception of the stone elf Symerille.

Glantri then ordered Duke Frost to slay the adventurers.

Duke Frost slowly walked up to Morgansander and pointed his sword at Morgasander’s throat.

“There are those here who betray the Duchy, the Kingdom and the very land,” he said, as the field grew silent. “They have taken oaths and have cast them aside. I will not allow this to happen. It saddens me that those I once trusted and called friend have committed such heinous acts of betrayal. I am sorry, Morgassander … sorry that it has taken me this many years to see the truth. I call upon the power of the landbond to release those that serve the land.”

With those words, the magics holding the Ashbans in place was negated and Frost turned with Morgsander to face Glantri.

Glantri immediately called upon Black Annis to send him dark fey to defend him, and a grand battle was joined.

Her Majesty ran to the fairy mound and thrust her sword into it, and a tendril of white mist rose from it, grabbing Ashbans from the field and rifting them out. It only grabbed those who had traveled in time. Those who were grabbed could still see the fight, but only from afar.

Glantri had obliterated Queen Sidraste and Baron Morgasander, Baroness Glenduria was struck down, and Sir Eros had been given a feeblemind curse and was picking daisies while the battle raged around him.

Duke Frost then ordered Sassafur to grab Sir Eros and to flee by Duke Frost, and after the mist grabbed Scarn, all that was left was Duke Frost against Glantri and his dark fey minions.

After Frost resisted all the fey could throw at him, and struck many of them down, Glantri was finally able to magically confine Duke Frost. Glantri offered the Duke the chance to rule the world with him. Frost’s response was that he would see Glantri dead, and burn the Code of Chivalry into his hide and post it about Ashbury.

At this Glantri used the Rhi Artan stones to permanently slay Duke Frost. This was the last the Ashbans saw before the mists closed and they could see no more.

To The Seelie Realms

The Ashbans found themselves in the realm of the Lady of the Mists. In spite of her waning power, she was able to rescue the adventurers who had been displaced in time. While there, the Ashbans learned that Annis’ power was stronger than ever and growing, which meant that the Lady of the Mists’ power was weakening at a comparable rate. They would have to act fast.

A group of adventurers had rescued the fey Azula from a dark fey named Vellik. In return for his freedom, Azula agreed to help the Ashbans. Soon the Lady of the Mists herself, though severely weakened and easily distracted, arrived with Azula. She informed the Ashbans that they would need to perform a fairy rade to Black Annis’ realm to free the time elementals that Annis imprisoned to disrupt time. With that, the Lady of the Mists gave Lord Jonathan five tokens that would protect the adventurers from Annis’ magic.

Music was needed to appease the mists, and a Grand Marshall was needed to lead the rade. For music Glorianna Wyndancer, Kuwo Mushtee, and Lhasa Skamar all wielded their drums and Cedric Fruvous was chosen to be the Grand Marshall. With that, Cedric was given a pocket watch and a poem of clues to aid in the fairy rade. Many times during the rade, Cedric called on the mute wild elf Ciarrah for wisdom in trying to figure out the poem.

The first of the fey tasks involved the meeting of three figures. All of them claimed to be Icenians who had a dream that they would be needed to fight the darkness. One of the figures wished to go and fight the darkness alone, another wished to hold her ground and defend against it, while the third wanted to pause and consider the matter further. While trying to convince the three to aid the Ashbans and figure out if the poem could help in the matter, the three vanished and one of Lord Jonathan’s tokens vanished, forcing the mists to part for the Ashbans. They had failed the first challenge.

The next challenge was a lone, heavily armored figure. He told the Ashbans that he would only allow them to pass if one of their champions defeated him in honor combat. Sparticous of the Black Forest Mercenary Company was the first to challenge the figure, but when even his strongest blows could not affect the creature, he yielded.

Lord Du’Gual Darkfire MacEwen then stepped up to challenge the figure. Du’Gual pulled his swings until he was barely scratching the creature, and slowly harmed the creature until it yielded. It gave Du’Gual a small piece of cloth, and the Ashbans moved on.

The next challenge was a series of games. A fey named Simon played a game where ten chosen Ashbans had to do as he said. A game of High Man Hurt was the second game to be played. Luigi, Drakonis and Perwin were quick to volunteer for that game. Perwin particularly, in a gingerbread man golem given to him by the Candyman, was an asset in this game. The third  game was a pie-eating contest. Rasq Darkmoon faced off against a mouth creature and out-ate it.

At this point the mists were changing from grayish to pure black, and Azula informed the Ashbans that he could guide them no longer. In his place he conjured a floating light to guide them.

The Ashbans followed the light until they came to a lone, dark figure in the road. It demanded a life as a tax before it would let them pass. A figure was spotted behind the Ashbans, but before anything more could be determined Cedric cast a Life spell upon the dark figure. It immediately vanished and the mists hardened, preventing passage. Another token from the Lady of the Mists was needed to continue.

As the Ashbans continued through the mists they suddenly heard a voice boom “Chose ten, the rest shall die.” Cedric and Ciarrah immediately began scouring the poem to determine where this was chronicled. Finding nothing, Cedric decided that the correct answer was to choose none. “If none were chosen,” he later told the Ashbury Times, “then there would be no one left out, and no one would die.” It turns out that he was right, and the party continued forward.

The final step was Annis’ realm. There the Dark Queen herself confronted them, as well as Glantri in the form of a dark fey. After mocking the Ashbans, Annis attempted to use her powers on them. The tokens that Lord Jonathan carried, however, protected the Ashbans, and they began to attack.

Lhasa was placed within a Circle of Power and began the monotonous drumming that distracted and annoyed Glantri and Dark Annis. They surrounded her and demanded that she stop, and this distraction allowed a  few adventurers to venture unnoticed down a path behind the dark fey toward a mound of some type of material. The adventurers believed that beneath this mound was the trapped time elementals.

Cedric and Ciaarah used the poem/riddle to figure out what to do. They placed a watch on the “shoulder” of one of the time elementals. This seemed to make the mound shimmer and it appear less thick.

The second step confused them. They tried a few magic spells to try to free the elementals but they did not work. Meanwhile, the battle blazed around them.

Upon reading more of the riddle, Ciaarah thought that perhaps if they used the sticks that were given to them by the Lady of the Mist, that would work as part of the “earthen images” described in the poem. Lord Jonathan was called and Lord Du’gal also provided the cloth he had received after defeating the Champion during the raid. Using two sticks and the cloth, they placed the cloth down first and then arranged the two sticks to look like it was 8 o’clock, as was shown in the riddle. This worked and again the mound over the time elementals shimmered and seemed to decrease in thickness. Still, though, they were not free. And the battle raged on.

There was one more section of the riddle that mentioned sands of time. Members of the Black Forest mentioned that Ragnar had been given some sand during the raid, so he was called and the sand was poured over the shoulder of the time elemental in accordance with the riddle/poem.

With the sand poured upon the prison, it shattered and the elementals were free. The Ashbans quickly explained the situation to them, and without a word they marched off towards Annis.

Most of Annis’ minions had been defeated, but she and Glantri were still fighting. The elementals stopped time and confronted the Dark Queen. They banished her and Glantri to be imprisoned in time indefinitely, and then released the Ashbans, informing them that they would be returned to their rightful time when they awoke in the morning. When the adventurers began to question the elementals, the beings merely ironically responded that they had “no time,” and they rifted out.

After a party thrown by the Jade Thorns in the Seelie realms, the adventurers retired for the evening and found themselves awakened in Ashbury, where Baroness Glenduria found them.

As mentioned previously, Duke Frost called a meeting in the Dragon’s Flagon to discuss the situation. Duke Frost listened to the story that the adventurers told. It was obvious that many adventurers wanted to kill Glantri then and there, and at one point, they even began the monotonous drumming in order to unnerve the young hero.

Duke Frost, however, offered Glantri the chance to defend himself against the charges that he had been in contact with Black Annis. Glantri denied ever having anything to do with the Dark Queen. As a show of loyalty, Duke Frost ordered Glantri to fall upon his own sword, and the young lad dutifully obeyed. After a tense few moments, His Grace allowed Baron Morgasander to cast a Life spell on Glantri.

Duke Frost asked Baron Morgasander if he felt that Glantri was worthy and His Excellency responded that he had been fighting against the Crix next to Glantri and had seen no sign of Glantri being anything but good and honorable.

The adventurers reported that the Crix would attack Dockside in the the sixth month of 603. It is not known how Black Annis, if she is still around to be a threat, will react and if she will stop the Crix from attacking when it did before, but Baron Morgasander and the Windwalkers are making preparations to defend Dockside.

Gnolls Traveling Through Trellheim

As reported in the last Ashbury Times, a group of gnolls led by one known as Gnashtooth has been seen traveling through Trellheim, apparently in search of a magical item.

A year or so ago, they obtained a magical axe which is now wielded by Gnashtooth.

Gnashtooth is from the southern country of Bobithet, where he apparently was a slave of the sarr there. He led the gnolls there to revolt and took on the name of an ancient gnoll leader, claiming to be him returned. He has since led his army to Ashbury, which he refers to as “The Returned Kingdom” and it appears that he is searching for something (or somethings) that he believes is hidden here.

Gnashtooth is a name well known to the sarr of the southern kingdoms, as parents warn their children that if they don’t behave, Gnashtooth would come for them in the night!

He apparently has powers greater than a normal gnoll and his minions also seem to have unusual powers as well. It is not yet known how this came to be, but it does not seem to be connected to the magical axe he carries.

The gnolls have been actively fighting undead whenever they encounter them, so some scholars have come to the conclusion that the item they are looking for is held by undead.

Other scholars disagree. “Gnolls hate undead as much as anyone,” says Sage Terrance Rigby of Patridge, who has been studying the creatures and their myths. “It’s perfectly logical for them to be destroying undead, who attack gnolls as much as they do  any other living thing. For instance, reports have come in that the gnolls are fighting against the Mastermind’s undead just as much as any other undead faction.”

Goblins Attack

Gray Goblins have been appearing everywhere across the duchy, and the once common nuisance of the regular green goblin has been replaced with the genuine threat of the gray goblin.

Until recently, these creatures have been brushed off as little more than a hassle for most local town guards or bands of adventurers. However, under the leadership of a Necromancer goblin known as “the Mastermind,” they seem to have formed a somewhat well organized fighting force.

On the sixth day of Fire Ant a group of these goblins led by the Mastermind attacked Ashbury City. The goblins were particularly unlucky, because on the day they attacked not only was His Grace Duke Frost holding a meeting with his barons and his court, but the missing adventurers of Ashbury had just reappeared. As a result, the Mastermind and his forces were quickly defeated. The Mastermind himself was killed and Louric of the Healer’s Guild erected a Circle of Power around the goblin until he resurrected.

Although most view the new attacks by the goblins as little more than a nuisance, Ashbury’s returned adventurers assured His Grace that if left unchecked, the Mastermind and his forces would grow into a major threat to the duchy. In response, His Grace has assured the people of Ashbury that he would take the threat more seriously.

Letters and Public Postings

To All Citizens of Ashbury,

Let it be known that Lady Talin Gildenlily is once again rightfully titled as Baroness Talin Gildenlily of Blythedale. This appointment is effective immediately and she shall have all the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges that this title includes from this moment forward.

Baron Emery Memmniger has graciously and chivalrously agreed to step down from the post he has ably manned in Baroness Talin’s absence. He will take his place upon my court as Ducal Knight and Seneschal to the Ducal Court.

Baroness Talin’s official investiture as Baroness shall take place on the morning of December 7, 602. All nobles in or around Ashbury City at that time are expected to attend and be attired in raiments appropriate for court. All citizens of Ashbury are invited and encouraged to attend. The actual time of the investiture will be announced as the date draws nearer.

Please join me in congratulating Her Excellency, Baroness Talin Gildenlily of Blythedale. Long may she live in service to Ashbury.

In Truth and Honor,
Duke Sir Frost Vardik

.

To all returning heroes,

I have been spending long hours perusing the contents of many letters, future newspapers, journals, and other bits of information provided by you. I can’t believe all that you have endured and all that is to come if we let it. You have survived in this alternate world, survived and learned of our unfortunate demise.

Glantri is a good man. I have broken bread with him, fought with him, and bled with him, and by the love of the people and the land, I will not see him treated like an experiment. Every one will be allowed to carve their own future from here.

We shall go foward armed with the gathered knowledge to make sure that it doesn’t happen the way that you all have witnessed. We must stop the gnolls from building their massive weapon, stop the hoblings from using the gorbe of the Southlands to their advantage while hiding behind a treaty, reverse the effects of the fey mound that has created the dangerous gray goblins, and ultimately, deal with their leader, the Mastermind. We must also defeat the more threatening enemies, the Undoer, Pansalore, and Morganna.

We must also deal with the worst enemy that I have ever faced, the one that comes from within: heroes at each others’ throats. If we are to stop this twisted future from taking form, then I implore that the heroes of Ashbury set aside past differences and petty squabbles, and come to learn to work together in all that they do. If any should perform ill tasks or seek to harm a would be ally to the people, I will seek justice. I will not rest until all who deserve punishment, receive it.

In loyal service to the people and to the land,
Baron Morgasander

.

Returned Citizens of Ashbury,

I have heard, in part directly from you, and in part second hand from others, the accounts of the grim future you beheld. I was at first stunned beyond belief at the account I heard, much as I was taken aback upon seeing you in person that Sunday morning in the Dragon’s Flagon. I was overjoyed at the return of so many I consider my friends, those who I first came to know in my memory. But your return has brought with it much knowledge that I wish I had never heard tell of.

I will not speak of the acts you have portrayed me as committing in this place you went to. Any who saw them are aware of what they are, and the simple mention of my association with such deeds brings sorrow and anger to my heart. I cannot disbelieve the word of all who have returned, I will not doubt what you saw. I can, however, assure you that this creature that I had become in the place and time you traveled to was not the person I am. Nor is it someone I could ever be.

I swear to all who have returned, and any who did not travel with you and may no longer trust me, that I am not a pawn of this “Dark Queen” and serve no one but Duke Sir Frost, The Land of Ashbury and the people that reside here. I would gladly give my final life to prevent the future that many of you lived through for so long, however I know that I do not have it within myself to become this thing that went under my name. Perhaps in time you will believe me through more than my words. Perhaps in time you will believe what I say through my actions. Until that time I ask for your patients and understanding. I am no Reviled Emperor; I am only a man trying to serve the people of the lands he lives in.

Humble Servant to the Duke,
The Land and the People,
Glantri,
Lieutenant of the Windwalkers

A Little Birdie Told Me

by Sue D’Onym

Hello, dearies! Well, what’s the latest scuttlebutt in the Duchy?

Obviously, everyone is talking about the reappearance of the “Returned Heroes.” And I couldn’t be more pleased! After all, my readers want to know all about the secret lives of the movers and shakers of Ashbury, and no one moves and shakes as much as the wily adventuring class and the nobles who love them.

Duke Frost held a meeting as soon as the adventurers returned and those adventurers who had appeared back in Ashbury city all gathered in the Flagon. (Many other adventurers around the duchy apparently found themselves grabbed by a strange tendril of mist and traveled through time as well, although they did not appear in Ashbury city.) Anyway, His Grace ordered someone to go and get Lord Du’Gual and there was absolute silence in the room while he was sought. Can you imagine! Even Glorianna the gypsy was quiet for what, three whole minutes!

Glantri was of course the main subject of discussion, and he apparently was completely dumbfounded by the story the adventurers told. (Some have speculated that the adventurers were all merely the subject of a Spinner’s Tale for almost a year and that none of what they decribed is in any way in our future, but I’m not taking any sides on this debate!). For his part, Glantri claims to have lost many of the powers he had once possessed, now needing to do things such as memorize spells from a book instead of just “knowing them.” Some at that meeting did not look like they wanted to believe him.

His Grace commented that he was not aware that the adventurers had been missing and he thought they were just on vacation. What’s a few months to a biata? However, since this was a major subject of discussion all over the duchy, and in this paper, one assumes this was just some sort of biata humor.

Still, the few stories I have heard are amazing! Sparticous the Marksman! Eros the Martyr! Zatarina the Rebel! Sassyfur the Traitor! I understand that Cedric of the Sage’s Guild is writing a small book about the experience which should be published by the new year, so those of us who did not experience this grand adventure (or Spinner story) can read all about it.

Baroness Talin has had her title restored to her upon returning, and ex-Baron Emery couldn’t appear happier. He really didn’t like the duties of being a Baron, but he is loyal and served when called upon. I am sure he will enjoy being Seneschal, and His Grace will appreciate his work. His Grace explained that “the Seneschal’s duty on my court is to act as a filter. All correspondence that might require my attention should be sent to Sir Emery. He will then decide if he can deal with the issue himself or if it needs to be brought to my attention.”

Anyway, Baroness Talin is already working on building up her household and many of the returned heroes are anxious to meet with her. Baron Morgasander and Baroness Glen are supposedly talking to certain adventuring groups about joining their courts as well, but no one will tell me which ones. These are just rumors, mind you, but in the absence of facts, what can I do?

King Kelanor IV has announced that he will be traveling to the dwarven nation of Dwarrenegor at the start of the new year and has invited all his Ashban friends to join him. He plans on working out some trade with the “new” dwarves, and assumes that the Ashbans may wish to do so as well. I would want to go if for no other reason than to see how he reacts when he sees Gilwing the elf.

Meanwhile, we need to put all our efforts into destroying this goblin calling himself “the Mastermind” which is kind of like a sloth calling himself “the sprinter.”  The Goblin Wars have been going on for many months now, and losses have been great, so let’s hope the returned adventurers can end this thing before something to do with polka dots happens.  (I don’t have all the details yet.)

Anyway, that’s all the gossip I have this time.  Why? Because I can’t be everywhere at once you know.  If you don’t write to me and let me know what the latest gossip is in town, how can I give you a column full of the News They Don’t Want You To Know?

So that’s all for this issue! Remember — if you can’t say something nice about someone, come sit by me.
